I once talked to someone at a party in college that made one brilliant point after another at the intersection of philosophy of mind and economics. He was crystal clear in his thinking and he had an elaborate (but not overfit as far as I can tell) model of how society was not made of individuals, but rather of attention streams. Rather than carving the social ontology at the individual, he would break it down in terms of attention types and degrees of signal to noise ratio in verbal actions. He viewed economic activity in terms of attention streams recruiting each other for information processing and resource extraction. And so on. He said he was putting this into writing and emailing professors about it, and I wished him luck. He apparently got into a fight with someone at the group house hosting the party later that night but I never learned what exactly happened. About a week later I found him at the cafeteria and asked him how his theory was going. "Oh, that? I was going through a manic episode. I just came back from the hospital, and currently being stabilized with meds. Doctors suspect bipolar II." Months later I talked to him again over dinner. Fully stabilized and "back to normal", he said he thought his theory was just bullshit coming from a manic mind. And now he was just recited full mainstream neuroscience ideas together with a Dennettian deflationary view of consciousness: "yeah, I guess it's all just my prefrontal cortex organizing sensations" or something to that effect. I thought his manic self was brilliant; his normal self a complete normie without any interesting point to share. Last time I saw him was at another party where he said he had stayed up all night on Vyvanse trying to induce a manic episode again. Didn't work out very well. Not that he he hurt himself (to my knowledge), but he just never was able to recreate the mental state of his episode, something which he dearly missed. I do remember he graduated and found a job, and I hope things work out for him. Part of me is still hoping to see a book on "Economics as Attention Management" on the shelves one day.

For all my new followers: Guys, you remember how anesthesia was discovered and then _not used_ for about 50 years? Yeah, for 50 years it was known that nitrous oxide, ether, and chloroform could abolish the pain of surgery and yet _nothing was done about it_. Well, it turns out right now there is a disease that's far more painful that surgery without anesthesia called cluster headaches. Standard medicine isn't very effective against it. It's 10/10 pain for 1-3 hours 1-3 times a day 3 to 12 months per year. Huge suicide baserate in sufferers (nicknamed "suicide headaches"). Pain is literally worse than receiving a gunshot. It's certainly much more painful that surgery without anesthesia. And guess what? DMT can be used to abort it in seconds, even at sub hallucinogenic doses for some patients. This is, I argue, literally one of the absolute most important EA cause areas right now, and almost nobody is working on it. If we get our act together, we could literally abolish this hell in the span of years. Will we?
I remember meeting a ~65 year old botanist and anthropologist at a conference a few years ago. His favorite activity is taking 600 to 1200 micrograms of LSD alone deep in the forest. He had done it hundreds of times. Other than that, he was extremely square. Would wake up every day at 6AM, meditate, do yoga at 8AM, and then get to work (writing books) which he would do for 10 hours a day, and eat the same food at the same time every day, and go to sleep early, around 9:30PM, every day. And then every other weekend, he would have a high dose forest LSD trip alone. He would take it in the morning and be right back home in time for dinner, which he appreciated as he could still do the same routine after coming down and not miss any sleep. So far he has never lost any sleep due to LSD; he just knows how to time it well. He "got" the topological solution to the boundary problem right away even though he isn't technical, and that is because he could relate it to various things that he had experienced on LSD. Also, he gave me one great piece of advice: "The main thing that LSD punishes you psychologically for is for having strong opinions - so I just don't have strong opinions anymore. I learn as much as I can, because knowledge is always good, but do I have an opinion on complex topics people struggle to understand? No, because that destroys peace of mind while on high dose LSD". He is a remarkably amiable and kind man, as far as I can tell.
A lot of woo is actually true. We just lack the mental capacity, the frameworks, the language, the ease of articulation, and the consistency of evidence to make it philosophically coherent and scientifically grounded. But we will get there. Disregard culture punishing you for taking this seriously. It's just a social fad that comes from the collective narcissistic injury to the archetype of humanity for not being able to comprehend reality and feeling defensive about it. It'll pass. The mystery is much deeper than culture would have you believe, trust me.

I'm not gonna sugar coat it: if you're serious about understanding reality deeply (and I mean deeply), some people will think you're crazy. That you've lost the plot. That you're lost in outer space. That you've broken your access to consensus reality. Etc. But listen to a String Theorist speak. The average person doesn't understand 1% of what they say, and *project* their own misconceptions, half baked ideas, prejudices, and unexamined assumptions onto the things the String Theorist is saying. Yes the String Theorist makes sense. The framework is internally consistent. But mental data structures to communicate it are missing from the cultural memetic soup. Within the minimal set of data structures to span the actual theory, you don't even see the theory. You see your own projections! Same. Same. Same. With consciousness and reality. If you're serious about understanding reality you can indeed have peers. Epistemic, academic, intellectual peers. But can you do it without many people thinking you've lost your marbles? Not a chance.
TPOT people are adults who really only want one thing which they have never been able to express (it's deeply hidden in the contents of their subconsciou), and that is to play a game of tag with other adults like them in a gigantic 3D playground like this. From a long conversation I had with someone who has legally administered psychedelics to 600+ people and who is one of the most self-aware persons I have ever met: Psychedelics don't treat narcissism. This seems very important to know about. Don't put your hope there.
Why do we have personality disorders? Why did evolution stumble upon them? And why isn't the case that we all share the same personality disorders - i.e. why is there such a robust humanity-wide distribution of _diverse_ personality tendencies? I reckon that this is caused by a "rock paper scissors" dynamic. Some personality disorders are actually optimal responses to living in a group where a _different_ personality disorder is prevalent. Paranoids understand and predict antisocials. STPD understands BPD. OCD can see through the mask of NPD. Etc. It's like a Pokemon chart! Here, Claude 3 Opus gives us a summary table:
Pro-tip: If you're a founder and you have decided what you want to dedicate your energies on, don't use psychedelics! It will jitter you out of the hyperparameter basin you worked so hard to hone in. Or allow you to see what you're doing for what it really is and the consequences of your actions from different points of view. Latch on to it as if your life depended on it. Get a pack of Zyns and latch on to real hard to all of those body knots and mental gnarls. Nothing that can ever allow you to notice how latching on to statusy things makes you feel... Kinda bad, actually. No, no, Founder Mode (TM) ain't compatible with this awareness of suffering. You just increase the suffering! That's the whole point of Founder Mode (TM). To become a fixture of the ecosystem others can depend on for their own latches. Oh, and certainly nothing that might do this at a more conceptual level. So don't expose yourself to inspirational content. Don't go to festivals. Don't consume high quality art. Only addictive, low-stakes cheap entertainment. That's the only way we can ensure you never get out of Founder Mode (TM). You can only raise your internal temperature up to the point where your precious latches get fortified. So Netflix and fast food it is. Give the latches some good seed oils to make them stick extra hard. It's the investors who subsidize your dinner, for they know they need to keep you in Founder Mode (TM). Indeed, avoid all new information if at all possible. You can't risk any of that free energy escaping your conceptual energy sinks and building up to something that might make you question your reality. Must Not Let The Energy Build. Latch Harder. I genuinely think that one of the things that distinguishes how people think is found in the *topological diversity* of their attention field lines. There are some thoughts, some visions, some ways of seeing that require either a _minimum_ of topological complexity _or_ a very specific topology. And if you don't currently have such an internal topologically structured mode of attention available to you, it is literally impossible to *get it*. I think this is why some people *get* the internal referent of *qualia* and some people don't. For example, when someone says: "What do you mean the 'blueness' of blue? Blue is just a frequency of light!" I think they are missing a specific kind of internal knot of attentional dynamics that allows them to _land_ on the blueness of blue as an object of attention. Instead, their attention goes to semantic content and elements of their world model, and never on the phenomenal character of their experience. It's an internal topology of attention issue. And this often changes on psychedelics, for example. These compounds, generally, increase the topological diversity of your field, allowing you to let your attention land in very novel ways. Not only knots, but cw-complexes and higher dimensional topologies. I believe this is a key non-trivial effect of psychedelics, and essential to understand how the mind works. You may not get it right away, but believe me, there is something here to be understood 😋

You know the feeling you get when you took a bunch of acid just 5 minutes ago? The agent is in the system, it will do its thing, you're in for a ride, but you don't notice anything apparent yet. I think the recent AI technologies are like that, but for humanity. We took the pill about 8-12 months ago, but it takes a few years for the effect to really start showing. Can we untake it? I don't think so. Are there known trip-killers? Not for this one, no. So let go of expectations and prepare to adapt to a new reality. It's all you can do right now.
[warning: disturbing thought] Part of the reason why I was close to burning out in 2019 is that I interviewed a bunch of people with cluster headaches. What I learned was that when physical pain goes above a certain threshold it becomes a different kind of situation: It essentially becomes spiritual pain, with all that it entails. At the worst, the person might feel abandoned by God, betrayed by reality, be forced to hate even love for not being there to rescue them when this happened. It's not only a deep depression that ensues, but in fact a kind of spiritual death. At the same time I kept hearing people dismiss the importance of physical pain ("I wouldn't mind it as much, the real problem is mental health"). I think this is simply widespread ignorance about the nature of the phenomenon, and this gap in understanding makes you feel hopeless when you see it up close. Of course this gets compounded by the fact that you know you'll ruin people's days if they actually grasp it (and so you're kind of a villain in the eyes of people who just want to have a good time or help the world in more normie family friendly ways). Since then I've balanced a lot more my activities and research. It's a marathon, not a sprint. But nonetheless, this still burns and needs to be stopped. We ought to become the love that these people need, even if it hurts. But not burn ourselves in the process. It's tricky... And yet, needed.
"Doomers are seeking power, that's all". "E/acc is reckless and selfish." My friend, we live in a complex ecosystem of memes, subagents, social strategies, and causal structures. Some people are indeed using doomerism for power. Some people are using it to signal their intelligence via clout association. Some are doing it simply to get closer to an epistemological circuit they intuit has value. Some are doing it because they're bored and want some excitement and meaning into their life. Some people want to accelerate because they see a game theory that incentivizes entrenchment of power structures. Some people say they want to accelerate because they are seeking funding and talent for their startup and need the fiction of doomers as power grabbers to cultivate the right aesthetic for a productive day-to-day activity. Some people want to seem balanced in order to not offend anyone. Some people are, naturally, grifters and will do whatever it is they get socially rewarded for. Most people, are of course, saying things to _shape social reality_ and change the landscape of reward and punishments in ways that are beneficial for themselves and their allies. Some people are impulsively trying to satisfy their need for validation in the moment and have no true beliefs one way or the other. Some people are impulsively truth-seeking and simply want to share what they truly believe whether or not it costs them dearly. Some people are flip-flipping between these alternatives depending on their neurochemistry and sensory inputs in the moment. Some people are instantiating honest to God utility maximization algorithms. Some people are shamelessly pretending to instantiate utility maximization algorithms just to go on a date with their crush. You get the idea.

Deep equanimity is a profound sense of trust in oneself and ones capacity for stress dissipation independently of whether it's over or we're so back. In truth, there is only one reality. And this reality contains all possibilities. At a policy, intelectual, and motivational level, the density of various branches depends on our actions. We ought to reduce suffering in sensible and universal ways. But acceptance of reality as a whole also does something to the soul that enables inner peace. And that's key to be able to act in wisdom. So don't be too cought up on whether it's over or whether we're so back. It's always both, when taking reality as a whole. Make peace with that, and you'll find the inner peace to have emotional reserve for this place we find ourselves in.

A lot of scientific progress is bottlenecked by researchers in academia not getting together on weekends to take LSD and work on their hardest technical problems together. There's just not enough time, no good set and setting, and no good culture for it. This can change.

So, you take a tiny amount of psilocybin and the world becomes a bit sparkly. You take more and it gets intricate. More and it becomes really complex and elaborate. More and the complexity overwhelmed you. More and it starts to become smooth somehow. More and it all simplifies and you often collapse into pure space, or God, or oneness, or a white light. What's up? Here's a super simple model. If your experience is described as a network, where nodes are sensations and edges are their connections, I'd argue that we start out with a relatively sparse network. In this model, as you increase the dose, you are in a way randomly adding edges to the network. At first this leads to an increased combinatorial space. But this peaks at some point! Which is when there are as many edges as non-edges. Above that point, increasing connectivity will actually start to *shrink* the combinatorial space! And as you approach a fully connected graph, the number of states possible begin to approach those of the sparse graph we started with, except that you're now moving around non-edges rather than edges (it's like a hyperconnected mirror image!). And finally, when you complete the graph there is just one state. Perhaps that's the state of cessation, which is surrounded by nearly complete graphs, each perhaps corresponding to states like oneness, white light, pure space, etc. So there you have it. Sometimes a simple model can go a long way.
I think it takes about 3 MDMA trips to really know what the substance does and the effects it has on different levels of the psyche. For LSD? Probably 50 trips or more. There are hidden corners of that state-space that truly require careful observation and digestion. And once you start meditating the experience shifts significantly (even 500 trips before meditation won't show you what LSD + meditation can do). For 5-MeO-DMT? No less than 500 trips. The state space is truly vast and far, far, far more interesting and "superintelligent" than people who say "you just become God" or "it's pure emptiness" would have you believe. There is a lot of detail and intelligence to notice. And DMT? No less than 1,000 trips. Probably 2,000. Seriously. It's the most complex and elaborate state-space of all. I get mildly irritated when someone has taken DMT 10 times and claims to know what it does. In truth they don't, not even a little. There are really, really, really interesting and unusual things that happen only once every few hundred trips. And then there are countless experiences that get unlocked only after very substantial phenomenological work and meditation that I think almost nobody has experienced. (Even a lifelong ayahuasquero will only access a region of the state-space because part of what unlocks other regions involves having mathematical, physics, computational, and philosophical frameworks almost nobody works with).
I've been spending approximately 45 minutes a day for the last month meditating on knots. This is not a casual practice. I'm talking about practicing them like someone might practice the piano to sound good. Revising, checking where I'm going wrong, emphasis on mistakes, etc. I can say they're truly portals to other realms and they give you a completely new perspective on attention and awareness. I would recommend it to anyone already with a serious meditation practice. It's new territory for me. Please note that just as getting good at playing a particular piece of music can make the mistakes more irritating, so is the case of practicing visualizing knots. They are sooo beautiful when you get them right. But the degree to which incorrect visualizations feel bad does also increase with practice. So it's not a free lunch, just fyi.
Today we interviewed someone who is hyperthymic. He's probably 4sd above the happiness mean. He said that he never feels insulted. He just finds things funny. He recommends not being in a social environment where you get rewarded for sharing your bad mood, as it reinforces it.
One of the things that salvia legitimately did for me was to unlock completely buried memories of what visiting a fast food restaurant like McDonald's was like as a 2-3 year old. The sense of being in a strange place with clowns, 3D labyrinth, weird greasy feeling in your hands and arms, and the feeling of being trapped in a lower dimensional limbo reality outside time while "they" decide what it is to be done with you... Indistinguishable salvia or McDonald's from the point of view of a child.
I think that the really stunning thing about DMT entities, which I still haven't properly captured in any content (will I ever?) is their *intelligence*. Here of course I'd talk about a super general qualia-based conception of intelligence. Really, you are sampling from a vast set of possible mind designs. Whatever these beings may be, internal or external, I want them to have their best possible life. Every qualia critter deserves love. At the same time, there is a weird part to this. These qualia critters come from a very diverse distribution of mind designs and many of them could be described as psychotic (or a generalized version thereof). The (for lack of a better term) "dopaminergic motivation bundles" that hold the "need to get things done" can get hooked to specific patterns of visual/audio/tactile qualia in a wide range of ways and form really arbitrary motivational architectures. The qualia computing they can do is really extraordinary, where textures/patterns of qualia are moved around from one place to another, copied, compared, evaluated, differentiated, and mutated. More so, these form complex mathematical structures with group actions, field behavior, and vector algebras all over the place. Talking to an "advanced" entity is a bit like trying to solve a Rubiks cube by intuition. The ways to create mini Qualia Computing systems inside you is enormous. Qualia critters are a wonder of nature, even if they are just internal hallucinations. Their computational significance is hard to overstate (they showcase, among other things, the enormous power of wave and holographic computing). I do think I can at least get a rough taxonomy of common qualia synergies here. I think a lot of it can be communicated and explained. A friend of mine is a big Instagram influencer in Mexico (nearly a million followers and deals with lots of brands). As far as I can tell, he is a happy man. He freely admits that he is selling a fake persona, and has achieved peace with it. I asked him if he could do something interesting with his account (from activism to conceptual art). His response: "every time I say anything that isn't consistent with the superficial Brand-aware junior/'hijo de papi' persona I get punished by the algorithm and it even makes me lose a lot of followers." The takeaway for me from this is that the strategy of "first become famous in a certain way and then cash out the social capital into something more meaningful" doesn't work. Superficial social capital can't be easily converted into meaningful and ethically useful social capital. This is why you should be 100% open about *being a weirdo* from day one. At least that's my strategy, and it seems to be working out.

Why is it that people concluding that "we are all one" get into yoga, esotericism, and reiki healing as opposed to aiming to contribute to the field of wild animal suffering, foundational valence research, and cosmological qualia? I never understood it.
Met a guy who said he's had contact with Mantids for a long time, probably 15 years or so. During sleep paralysis, Ayahuasca / DMT journeys, meditation retreats and spontaneously. Here are some fast facts according to him (taking what he says at face value): * The praying mantis in this world is a morphogenetic extension of the superorganism that is the mantids state of consciousness / realm. * He has an implant in his hand that he got during an abduction in a sleep paralysis, and it left a small but visible scar he showed me. Said his hand never felt the same since and feels enhanced somehow. * While having a toothache he smoked some DMT and the mantids took him to an operation room, put a big tube into his mouth, in which colorful balls rolled (think popping boba pearls) which then dissolved in his mouth and delivered glowing neon liquid that completely fixed his toothache and dental issue. * Their consciousness is somehow related to the center of the sun and solar flairs. Unclear how, but definitely a connection here. * He says the mantids always find him somehow in new locations. There a mantis insect typically knocks on his door and says hi to him wherever he goes (where this is even possible) * They are a hyper intelligent hyper technological incredibly advanced, old, wise, insectoid, ultra telepathic, hive-mind yet focused and coherent, super consciousness of sorts. * They have a sense of humor and often present themselves as wearing lab coats to make you giggle. * They are scientists, geneticists, timeline weavers, have access to time control, have fused matter and consciousness. * They are way more advanced than the greys, Nordics, and reptilians. On another realm of consciousness altogether. * There are factions within them, but the biggest contingent by far is benevolent and does genetic experiments across many planets, maybe galaxies. * We are small children to them. * They are tasked with directing life towards hypersentience. Other advanced species maybe help with other evolutionary steps. And the full mantid help will come down the line when we are ready. Right now they're just gently steering us and preparing us for a big transition in the future. * They are detached yet compassionate. Very zen like yet also very curious and humorous. One of my favorite hobbies is to find people who have internally coherent, sophisticated, yet completely unusual theories of reality. I call it "Recreational Metaphysics". Engaging with them creates novel "thought forms" and cherished unusual feelings. Bob Sanders is a YouTube "medium" who is like this. In principle, AI can take care of every single sentient being on earth. Here it is feeding individual cats; presumably it can know exactly where they are and reach them anytime. Keeping them fed with in vitro meat so they stop being obligate carnivores while still being completely free to roam around. Of course this implementation is silly, but hey, it's food for thought.
Have you noticed that shape rotation ability and decoupling ability are correlated? I don't think this is a coincidence. The gestalt generator (the part of your brain that is looking for patterns it recognizes on the denoised sensory stream) is quite sticky. You can only rotate the underlying datastructure if your gestalt generator doesn't latch on to its projections. So having less sticky gestalts is both a predictor of being better at rotating shapes and at decoupling variables. I think there's a deep connection here.

I think these are the "building blocks" of our inner world simulation. Namely, optical catastrophes. The process of reification that builds the sense of solidity involves confusing these catastrophes for real, enduring, self-existing things out there. We then latch on to these special points of the non-linear optical system and treat them as object in the real world (rather than the optical illusion of our world simulation "right here" that they are). I think it takes quite a bit of defabrication for this to become apparent, though. Say, noticing what happens to one's world simulation on 15mg of 5-MeO-DMT or in deep concentration. When your inner world simulation is built off of the resonance and interlocking of many of these catastrophes, the world can fell really thick and real. But it's a tangle, a web, of these things. They can be sorted out and deconstructed with the right techniques. Mostly through unlatching our deep sense of reality. And the reveal is that we were latching on to projections of our own mind all along. Taking an optical illusion way too seriously :-) Note: I don't deny physics or the world outside our inner world simulation. I'm not saying we live in a computer Matrix or anything the sort. I think we're in basement reality. But our experience is an inner world simulation constructed by our brain through, among other things, non-linear optics.
