“More engineers” will usually *not* solve your problems. Because the real problem is often a strategy problem, culture problem, interpersonal problem, trust problem, creativity problem, or market problem. More engineers *will* solve your “I don’t have enough engineers” problem.

In 2002, a 19-year-old British garbage man won 10 million pounds (approx $15 million) on the lottery. He spent it all on drugs, gambling and prostitutes and 8 years later was back working as a garbage man again. https://t.co/EmXYk60slc

If there’s something you’ve been wanting to change about your life (eg: “fix my sleep”), and you’ve spent maybe 10+ years making failed attempts at it despite having done the reading, etc - the problem is probably upstream. Ie it’s not actually the sleep, it’s something else

Been reflecting on this for some time, this idea that the web destroys people’s ability to focus on something like reading a book. Sometimes I suspect people have it sort of backwards. Focusing on a single self-contained experience to me is sometimes kind of like eating baby food https://t.co/69AqVk4Vwr

I didn't "have a cigarette problem", I was using cigarettes to medicate my "visa/school mismatch" problem, which had catalysts including a "parental pressure" problem, "societal pressure" problem if I were diagnosed they'd just have put me on meds rather than address all of that

casual observation: it's interesting that there's zero mention of the body in Roko's otherwise excellent post about Ugh Fields. it's implied to be an entirely mental/psychological problem (tho if you think about it, "ugh" is a bodily feeling of revulsion) https://t.co/JJf3IVRWan https://t.co/Sjk50vjgz4

A lot of visible problems that you can't seem to solve are secretly solutions you don't want to admit to adopting to problems you don't want to admit to having.

one way I'd love to see our society being more functional: I go to the allergy specialist, and instead of him saying "yup you're allergic, here's a series of 24 shots for the next few years" he would just say, "have you tried buying a roomba" (this is what solved my problem)
