the question is fundamentally broken, misframed, designed (intentionally or otherwise) to perpetuate error and failure and despair. "what to do with my life" is not a question to be answered. it's a bug https://t.co/8JFDnSnsFX

huh, it's actually literally an infohazard but it's so common and widespread that people don't see it as such

your life is not a thing to do something with, it's not a resource to be allocated efficiently (this itself is known to induce despair), your life is the domain in which you exist it's not a mathematical equation to be solved with any sort of finality, but a tension to be danced

it has been known to induce despair for HUNDREDS OF YEARS. JS Mill wrote in his autobiography that he was depressed and that he realized, from a voice within him, that achieving all his goals would not make him happy https://t.co/fyjyYoNIUh

went looking for the original quote from Mill > And an irrepressible self-consciousness distinctly answered, "No!" At this my heart sank within me he goes on to describe how it was the work of artists and poets that lifted his spirit https://t.co/id5rkewyEn https://t.co/hvQHzMRNWA

"figure out what to do with your life" is a psyop, a spectre, a spook. yes, it's POSSIBLE that one can find a way to walk this very narrow tightrope in a way that brings joy and meaning and purpose, but I've talked to hundreds of people about this and it's pretty fucking bleak

you do have to figure out how to pay the bills, yes, and you pay the bills so that you can LIVE your life I'm being very adamant and insistent here because I have seen people lose years, decades of their joy to this little linguistic slip up it's worth being adamant about

I recommend being able to at least experience & embody this energy for a little while, just to feel in your bones that you do not exist to be a cog in the machine. you might BE a cog in the machine, but that is not your PURPOSE. dont let them take yr soul https://t.co/CrqC1vnniz

and even here it's fucking tricksy shit ok – if you're not careful it's very easy to end up being subjected to your own internal authoritarian-tyrant who demands that you live a life of Meaning and Purpose. NO. FUCK EM. FUCK ME. FUCK EVERYTHING

and yeah you can't Hakuna Matata forever, ultimately the pendulum has to swing back and you have to come to a synthesis, but the thing is that synthesis must come from within you. from your *heart*. listen to the inscrutable exhortations of your soul https://t.co/i5cjayL5L9

again I say to you the problem is misframed. the princess is in another castle. if you misdiagnose a feeling problem as a thinking problem you will be trapped there indefinitely https://t.co/XewTZzXps6

I shall never forget the Japanese artist Hasegawa yelling in exasperation at the endless request for explanations from his Western students, “What’s the matter with you! Can’t you feel?”

@visakanv but “life is for play, life is for dance” is literally an answer to that Q. the Q of what one does doesn’t disappear by giving a certain class of prescription (which i strongly agree w)

@visakanv it's just like when people answer "no" to "am I worthy?" and then they ask "how to become worthy?" while the proper next question is "is it really bad?"

When someone expresses a thought like “I’m worthless”, the default response seems to be something like “no you’re not!”, but I think it’s actually better to ask “is that bad?”
