Watching Joe Rogan's talk with Alex Jones. He's got a bad case of memes. Poor fuck still thinks that all that stuff was done years ago and 'perfected', and now we are being prepped for it. How long till he brings up 'secret government slush funds' to justify his belief systems?

I talk to my family about that kind of thing a lot. We're all crazy. He mentions human-animal hybrids; I thnk he's talking about the soviet era 'Experiments In The Revival Of Organisms' and the similar research we had in the states?

Some of my family calls me an ignorant fool for not believing this stuff. Jokes on them. Spending their time reading second hand ghost stories and conspiracy theories, and various folk theories. They might as well be listening to gossip.

I ask my family 'how'? They just wave their hands. Meanwhile I'm holding my tongue because I know how they do it and they'll think i'm a demon. I spend time reverse engineering how to do a lot of it without any of slushfund or centralized agency pulling strings behind a curtain.

Hilarious to think Alex Jones is only just now figuring out he's a victim of the 'this is phil fish effect' and the nature of the overton window. It's like living life with blinders on, looking for narrative demons & spooks behind the curtain. Seeing agency where none exists.

I remember my mom talking to me about human animal hybrids years before Alex Jones even brought that. I'm sitting there snickering because I've known about that stuff since gradeschool, and understood the basics of gentics since before we even had classes on the stuff.

My uncle sometimes name drops various interest groups to sound mysterious & give some weight to his ghost stories. I'm snickering because I've already mapped a lot of the groups he mentions & have fun poking holes. Its like a game where the person who can bullshit better wins.

Of course he's just parroting something he heard in the news, or from the sensationalizers like Glen Beck.Please. Its my fucking hobby to find out where people get their information. I explored Glen Beck in 2008 when he joined Fox news.

I imagine the world must be very scary. I keep ratcheting up the social networks until I find a credible source. Instead they get stuck and sucked into a lullaby by some pendant weaving a narrative.I wish I could take comfort in that certainty, like so many seem to do.

I'm at a point in the interview where they've googled one of his rantings about pig-human hybrids (from MIT Technology Review). I think I'm following one of the paper's authors here on Twitter because of learning about another group who were putting brain cells in rodents.

And Joe's just exasperated because he can't keep up with Alex's chaotic headspace.I think its easier for me because I've learned to predict how people go off on tangents and get distracted in their train of thought.I wish I had the personality to do a talkshow like that.

An aside, they keep cutting between the two speakers. I keep seeing Joe who's saying things into the mic that sound smart. Do you think they're using one of the reality TV cut effects there? I'm not familiar with the format they use or how much editing is done on it.

I think a lot about how easy it is to stitch together videos to create an illusion of discourse. This Weird AL skit with Eminem always pops into my head when I see jump cuts. https://t.co/WMft4dziIq

My bias here: I have a project that involves stitching together clips of youtube videos for creating super-cuts, & background knowledge on how that editing process works. I wanted to be a film-editor in 8th grade and spent time learning a lot of AV software packages.

Oh wow, now Alex is angry at Joe for "knowing all about it". This is what it's like for me at family events -> its like a penis measuring contest over knowledge. Poor Alex has no idea that Joe did an interview with Robert Sapolsky on the topic of T Gondii?https://t.co/PLSuHQydVO

The "breakaway civilization" idea is the meme that spawned the C.I.T. Plot line within Fallout 4.Did you know you're being conditioned thru ur vidya games to accept human machine hybrids /shttps://t.co/B2tzA4LLif

I wonder how many of the writers of Fallout 4 realized they were baking in a controversial narrative framing of MIT?https://t.co/sjCFucvwg6

That would explain nebulous cancer risk people can't seem to pinpoint. But it is next to impossible to look up. When you do, you get 50 articles about Martha's theories about energy healing salt crystals. Web is too littered w/ conspiracy theories to find or fund honest studies.

What I think is happening is that networks of gossip and misinformaiton are being spread on the back of an anti-state sentiment. People whip up stuff like https://t.co/cF3ZIAL3LY in with their particular narrative framing and run with it.

Example: People talk smart meters as invasion of state regulations + a security risk. But no one cares about it.But you say "oh noes, Gubberment is forcing Radio Fequency CANCER to kill YOUR KIDS" bam!BTW, I can tell when my neighbor turns on his TV.https://t.co/vyDihmtc9m

"Bitcoin was invented by [the devil/CIA/lizzard people/illuminati] to bring on the one-world government that 'the globalists' want." is really powerful meme if you wanna protect your community from predatory schemes like that OneCoin affiliate networks that was spreading around.

I'm half tempted to look for and spread a meme on essential oils being a government conspiracy to poison your kids, because i'm seeing so much garbage coming out of the MLM space. I don't have the reach or influence to do so, and honestly it might just make the problem worse.

I'm still salty about https://t.co/Yy61X2O56H and how most essential oils are fake. There was a nice one I found a while back that actually repelled spiders thru some terpenes. But the market got overrun by louses. Snake oil salesmen: a manifestation of the serpent lying to eve.

I've noticed some of the ants in the backyard are infected by mites. I think there might be some plant oils that could heal them, and then they would start competing with the spiders. Some strange stuff about this in the science https://t.co/m13tz5FQUT

But I can't actually confirm any of the essential oils are what is on the label anymore. There is no quality control. I think I even saw one that was using the 'fake' orange flavoring that we use to lie about orange juice. The market sees the demand and sells bullshit in a jar.

I don't think it is a mistake Alex has the background he does; one so similar to my own family history. My thinking is that collecting these kinds of memetic rituals is (was?) a good defense mechanism against the unknown dangers of the world. He's acting as a modern soothsayer.

When you start looking at memetic rituals as cultural magic - a series of rituals around contamination and decontamination of society (one fundamentally promulgated on purity) -quickly start to see these patterns everywhere.Witch Doctors as Meme Traders?https://t.co/2SME7SMeGX

Huh, cellphone radiation study talks about sleep issues related to brainwaves.Going to have to dig into that to see if they have idea what causes brain wave changes. If it also shows up in rats, could perhaps see if it aligns with gut microbes and https://t.co/Q1fbM0WFaB

"Long-term Continuous EEG Monitoring in Small Rodent Models of Human Disease Using the Epoch Wireless Transmitter System" might do the trick. tho seems barbaric.https://t.co/QCYGRMDwvV

That argument is a case of "Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" acting itself out in the mind of someone having no idea what is going on at technological level, but is acute aware of social trends + acts as a conduit for a particular memetic godhead.

What is fun to do is get three of these kinds of people in a room together and try to get them to all agree, and then slowly realize that they are all talking about different gods. This is a great way to avoid your alcoholic family members for long periods of time.

He's talking about people tripping while sleeping due to sleep apnea and other breathing problems, and further reinterpreting as the sensation of talking with aliens? Alex has been researching his own etiology. I bet he has those experiences as he says. https://t.co/4QS0M2yor9

Imagine having a deep experience via LSD - thinking you're talking with aliens or some other thing your brain makes a connection on. Then add in a bit of agency projection due apophenia. Start reading about LSD experiments government was doing in the 60s. You'd sound crazy too.

Half my family experience that. It gets narrativized it within their dominate egregore: viewed as speaking with god, seeing spirits/angels, or some other psychotic sound experience. Its really easy to twist that experience and convince them it was aliens. https://t.co/91Q731FPcB

He bombards you with insight porn and then slows his cadence - creating a sort of dramatic emotional journey. He's a master showman - using his own underlying behavior toward being entertaining. It's infectious and easy to consume if you already have a mental framework for it.

"Eighteen (eight female) right-handed, healthy volunteers were recruited through local advertisement" means this fails the "WEIRD" test; it only tells us that people around Cambridge correlate delusion with Fronto-striatal prediction error. https://t.co/PraW73kPRm

A good critique of the joe rogan episode."the flipside of inviting Jones on a world-famous podcast to say dumb things for five hours is that there are people out there who listened to the episode and did come away believing that humanoids might be real"https://t.co/u3nJfTlACU

Although, having been interested in neuroscience since I was a child... I must sincerely ask... what is a humanoid?https://t.co/B2J11drNnI

I'm all for critique'ing odd comments that Jones talks about... But please FFS, do your research before writing. Jones' MO is all about saying things that seem outrageous but are actually rooted in real phenomena - that's how he feeds you his brand of misinfo.

30 seconds... I find two articles that seem to corroborate his views. Here's human-animal hybrid: https://t.co/P7q6OW62hSHere's story about harvesting prisoners for organs in china: https://t.co/yru0zU7NtfEverybody drinking his brand of coolaid weaponizes this against you.

The art of conspiracy theory is to create plausible re-envisionings of reality - a different narrative frame from those the mainstream use. He's not 'just making shit up'. He's referencing real things, but connecting together under a lens that suggests conspirators are behind it.

The author of that piece exploring how Rogan seemingly acts a conduit for "the intellectual dark web" ends up falling for the traps this other piece talks about: accidentally spreading misinfo by 'mainstreaming the fringe'. https://t.co/cCCznPf7Ba

Its frustrating to see jones being placed on the same level as musk. While the author seems to be trying to attack Rogans credibility with that framing, what they're also doing is relating two iconclastic people via an implicit association thru the nebulous definition of the IDW.

Rogan's show is structured and predicated around the idea of interviewing interesting people, so that comparison isn't imparted as explicitly. The very structure of the show - a series of interviews with cultural iconoclasts - removes much of that accidental cross validation.

The rest of the critique seems more reasonable, I just wish it wasn't trying to leverage the situation around Alex Jones as a way to frame the situation. There's a reason why I didn't link to that interview here. In the end, slate is just spreading the content wider.

Would be funny if someone created a voice clone of Alex Jones like they did to Joe Rogan, used a style transfer system to translate the framing of the language to his sensationalism, and then had a visual puppet of him reading from this book.https://t.co/OZrdcxlgEb
