i know “addiction” is the mainstream, andrew huberman, overton window frame for our relationship with our phones, but it so impoverished humans have a need for trance. phones offer that. humans have a need to plug into shared consciousness. social media offers that

humans have a need for trance, like we do for sleep. states outside of time https://t.co/KnkudFokBk

>one of the draws of social media > >is soul memory of feeling sensorially plugged into the shifting current of the world > >ability to sense the shifting breeze, rustling leaves, fungal hyphae passing chemical messages from tree to tree - https://t.co/sFxfz9PtW3

humans have a need for attachment https://t.co/7yOT0olNTz

i don’t know who i heard say this, but it feels like we unironically get attached to our phones like whatever attachment system was meant to attach to the presence of a nice, warm, loving mammal, and eventually ourselves just gets hijacked https://t.co/XVJZGK1ZqR

for something, to be reliably there https://t.co/0d4Ng1l5cy

@sheherenow_ @mauve_sky you deserve that. the stars were meant to kiss you and smile on you as you live your life, griefs, triumphs, silly moments and all. know them. love them. else you’ll love your phone, because the phone is what is reliably there. we love whatever is reliably there

"isn't that like saying 'humans have a need for food. candy offers that'?" no, it's not. it's deeper than that. it's like saying "humans have a need for eros. for intense, bodily experiences. for relief. candy offers that" https://t.co/QweZqvc6vo

there is an element of addiction to discuss. how it simply, quite literally exposes our nervous system to superstimuli. our system encounters an agent so powerful it wasn't prepared to regulate we have to talk about addiction im glad the overton window is talking about that

but it's not just that we have to talk about trance, shared consciousness, attachment too phones do play a magical role into stepping up to those roles. and sometimes a restricting, development-arresting role, when they become all that we know

another aspect to this— "the importance of discernment is a product of the times" before, you just didn't have phones, or candy. less superstimuli. now we have them, and have to discern more https://t.co/m3SAaT9KkU

>Phones are a mechanism by which the soul leaks from the body. All liminal spaces have been converted into soul spaces. Our minds nearly separate from our bodies in these moments. Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, I had these thoughts while eating a breakfast sandwich and… https://t.co/pQDudksX5n

more on why a positive orientation matters and to look for the positive orientation, you have to go outside our purely "chemicals in your brain" "neuroscience" language. you might just have to go to language like trance, attachment, shared consciousness https://t.co/sfiWha6M7T

if you squint you can see mainstream culture slowly tracing the andrew huberman to gabor maté pipeline https://t.co/uxrex4vNE6

@AskYatharth I'm so glad you see this!! somewhere there's a tweet floating around of "the only way to resolve addictions is to identify the need they meet, and meet it somewhere else" and I could not agree more also like, I'm not sold on phone = bad. clearly some versions are, but not all

@AskYatharth big agree https://t.co/tCblKHlzBd
