Finally posted a critique of effective altruism that took me 6 months to write, āEffective altruism in the garden of endsā: https://t.co/Ot52uIqZpb

Hereās a tweet from frigginā April talking about itI hope you find it useful, even though I rushed my positive account toward the end, a proposal for reconciling EA with the good life https://t.co/pHNxj5rVGU

For the past 3 weeks been trying to write a manifesto on an alternative to effective altruism. Itās been brutalMy first draft was cogent, but uninspiring. My second draft tries to capture what *being* a die-hard EA was likeIāve had to relive that time to relate to it

Shoutout 2 tweeters who helped me write it @anderssandberg @algekalipso @__drewface @AnneSelke @ellie__hain @georgejrjrjr @edelwax @lizasimonova @kathryndevaney @MilanGriffes @flowerornament @NathanpmYoung @RafaRuizdeLira @tasshinfogleman @valor_zhang @Jesper_G_Ostman @zhukeepa

I wish I had read this post by @SpencrGreenberg when I first joined EA. It might have spared me a lot of the confusion & suffering I describe in the essay above š¬Link:https://t.co/iVE8HbYJhm https://t.co/7KGeTwevjZ

Playing w one recipe for the Good Life, which is āfind the end in every instantā until effortlessāLive in the momentāToo unspecific š Iām talking abt noticing the *specific thing* supplied by the moment that I*already appreciate.* A currently available *end-in-itself*

@TylerAlterman this is beautiful. at a minimum, i appreciate it as a cautionary tale: "I extrapolated the implications of this... I went from being the happiest person I knew to eventually wanting to end my life."

@TylerAlterman "This returns me to the problem of turning ends into means. In practice, when I turn ends into things that are primarily instruments for other ends ā rather than engaging them for their own sake ā I engage them in lower-quality ways."hey its me https://t.co/2xUYIYpVD8

@TylerAlterman What's interesting is that my journey first took me to traveling, where turning it into a means sapped the joy from it. I see it starting to happen in turning relationships into means in front of me

@TylerAlterman IME going too HAM on an end is what turns it into a means - for you, EA; for me, travel, and i'm finding myself now looking into the ends->means event horizon for relationships and EA. since i've transformed my life into capacity building to superblast into ends of my choosing

@TylerAlterman i respect how you were able to dive straight into "help" as meaning. i needed to take a more selfish route first to sufficiently free myself of self coercion to notice and accept it as a legitimate moral desire

In the 21st century there arose a hyperrational general intelligence that would operationalize available resources (eg money, people) into convergently instrumental goods to be deployed for utility. It did not value the beings it consumed for parts except as means to an end.

@TylerAlterman hey look at this, I think I stole your line subconsciously! from a piece I published last week: https://t.co/VSHJNg6bAX https://t.co/WW7eV5Zq6r
