slowly shifting away from "what am i feeling?" to "what do i want?" which as it turns out feels even *more* vulnerable

@the_wilderless mentioned the other day that from least to most vulnerable to share, for him: thoughts, bodily sensations, feelings, wants / desires / imaginings which resonates for me and i've been reflecting on it

"Suppose an eight-year-old writes a story about being chased down a mouse-hole by a monstrous spider. It'll be perceived as 'childish' and no one will worry. If he writes the same story when he's fourteen it may be taken as a sign of mental abnormality." https://t.co/3KC1wd49LR

ironically i'm now gonna quote someone else: keith johnstone said a similar thing in impro about artists censoring their creativity out of worry about how it reflects on them, rather than e.g. seeing art as something that pours out of but doesn't belong to the artist https://t.co/Tflw0EYCW1

"We have an idea that art is self-expression - which historically is weird. An artist used to be seen as a medium through which something else operated. He was a servant of the God." (@s0ulDirect0r) https://t.co/3KC1wd49LR

"Imagination is as effortless as perception, unless we think it might be 'wrong'... Then we experience ourselves as 'imagining', as 'thinking up an idea', but what we're really doing is faking up the sort of imagination we think we ought to have." https://t.co/3xUjA5SBwJ

oh good @the_wilderless wrote a thread elaborating on the thought-body-feeling-wanting ladder stuff from above; worth a read, i'm gonna be chewing on this https://t.co/XeoJEAXDRk

But even more so than emotions, it seems like soul, purpose, desire can be even harder to *recognize* or *allow* in ourselves, let alone express to others.

I’ve been paying attention to this more, when people talk about what they want, their sense of purpose, their desires, etc, It’s weird. People are weird about soul. https://t.co/2ELidIQmj1

if you're using to asking what you're feeling, "what do i want?" can be the scary question if you're used to communicating what you want, asking how you feel can be scary https://t.co/xHRbAv3Hce
