CDC recommends hand sanitizer as a backup method, suggesting soap and water as the main one.https://t.co/SGhU5VHFQJHere's a collection on how to make your own soap:https://t.co/I2nmuIONQQ

Soap is good, but so are backup systems to prevent spread when you don't have access to soap and water.https://t.co/sOjvWTUSCU

@s_curves But Nothing beats handwashing with soap. it literally washes the germs off after destablizing the cell wall's adhesion. Stuff like this would solve a lot of the problems in places were the bacterial resistant stuff is the worst https://t.co/nFLOBh9UI6

Apparently there is a thread on /diy/ where they're sharing tips on how to DIY PAPRs.https://t.co/4rQnY83VUySome of these are good.

PAPR = Powered air-purifying respirator = run air thru a filter + use pressure to keep dust and stuff out of your mask. You need a high-static pressure to pull air thru to get +6CFM, so some fans won't work. Here's one using a heater fan, and one with a salvaged hair dryer fan. https://t.co/W24YlwatuR

Highly recommend verifying any advice from an anonymous image board using 3rd party sources. E.g. I looked up the 3M PARP specs to confirm that 6cfm thing was correct: https://t.co/MIzqqvEXBKAnd as others point out in thread, Ozone is dangerous, & UV light is also dangerous.

Still trying to get details, but this idea is fascinating:https://t.co/G0ghlGys3PThis is effectively acting the same way that certain powders destroy the shell of insects and desiccates them. May work extremely well against coronavirus's lipid shell + also fight off bacteria.

"To demonstrate the concept of virus deactivation system based on salt recrystallization, the middle layer of three-ply surgical mask, polypropylene (PP) microfiber filter, was coated with NaCl salt as an active virus negation unit"https://t.co/VlPwVEeCEx(h/t @MarkProffitt)

FYI, salt circles are actually a protection spell. If you imbue your mask with a solution and then let it recrystalize, it can kill encapsulated viruses. But don't forget the surfactant.https://t.co/M7lDJweEY4

As its a crystallization process, there may be a sweet spot where the salt is most effective. Still trying to figure out how much to concentrate the salt. Not sure if the surfactant type matters, but it says the material became hydrophyllic as a result.

Soaking some of those central air filters in a salt solution overnight ought to do the trick in a DIY mask situation. The hydrophobic thing is for the waterproof masks. In the situation that we have a severe pandemic and we need more hands to help, every little bit counts.

I think we can assume what we need to catch are airborn droplets of liquid. That is to say, sneezes and coughs from infected patients.CDC recommends N95s masks + eye protection if in close contact w/ infected individuals in healthcare setting. They're rated at 0.3 micron. So...

This study (note: on healthy people) seems to suggest a large degree of airborn droplets from a sneeze are >100μm, but with some people having a spray that hits around 20μm?https://t.co/hcnu0ttwtyStochastic processes of sneezing + stochastic process of filtering? Maddening. https://t.co/M02xxYHo5O

My head right now: wondering how one might get a lot of infected snot and a sensitive enough viscosity meter to see how runny noses and mucous viscosity impact aerosol spray sizes.https://t.co/ynf6wI9wsq

Apparently I have to know how to do math to figure that out."second formula gives an expression of the ratio of the drag force actually sensed by the ball falling in an infinite medium to that in the Stokes limit as a function of Reynolds number alone."https://t.co/do5e3mbClv

Loosely speaking, air flow is about surface area, this is why filters are folded IIRC. But filter effectiveness seems to be about thickness and material structure. So basically, virus droplet has to make it thru a gauntlet of fibers without hitting one / getting adhered.

But you lost me at "Lagrangian Modelling of Droplet Collisions in Spraying Systems"https://t.co/dIxQSrDjKpSo I assume a thicker filter = higher chance of stopping droplets. So, folding it in half to double it up should work just fine as long as it's big enough for airflow.

Does anyone know how to make a makeshift static pressure measuring device out of junk?CFM seems a bit more complicated ( https://t.co/C3pfaSZXBq ). But static pressure is just a fancy spring valve system, no? https://t.co/JZRYAGQ8Ow

Protip: if you are distilling 40% vodka to increase ABV to sufficient concentration so that you can make your own hand sanitizer, it is important that you do it safely. Alcohol is extremely flammable, and potentially explosive under pressure.https://t.co/tkA6WTJ2Dn

Any rubbing alcohol at 95%-99% ABV (alcohol concentration) is highly flammable. In fact all alcohol (including hand sanitizer) should be treated as a flammable and should be used safely. Burning is painful all the way up until the point you are dead.https://t.co/BaiPzcg7im

I worked in a nursing home as a floor care attendant (janitor) back in 2006ish. This was during a massive wave of Norovirus infections.People died. Many healthcare professionals don't know how to wear masks properly, and they spread misinformation about mask wearing too.

I was given a reprimand for not coming in to work when I contracted Norovirus. I was disgusted.Shortly after, residents (patients) I cared about died.People I made friends. That was the moment I realized I hated the healthcare system. Seething.https://t.co/641echvDrY

To deal with this, I project myself into the future. They are already dead. We are healing. We are making changes that matter.Maybe we'll take the flu seriously. Maybe we'll not overwork the staff & force them to work crazy hours.Maybe we'll start to take care of each other.

Worth noting that applying a salt layer to the mask changes the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophillic. This article talks about how normal masks should be sterilized with respect to their electrostatic nature, with some possible implications.https://t.co/uXHZJGyX5j

I just realized that the robotic vacuum I bought to help me clean (when I can't get out of bed) also has one of these filters in in it. And when it's running at 100% power, seems to do more than 6cfm.Could actually build the PAPR in a cave.https://t.co/cH2dFOIWQs

Has anybody tested white wine vinegar against SARS-CoV2?A study in 2004 tested a concentration of 6% against SARS-CoV, another strain with similar lipid membrane. It got close to isopropl, with ≥3.0log10 in 60 seconds.DOI:10.1007/s00430-004-0219-0 (PMID: 15118911) https://t.co/pCEDMvXXGR

My standard cleaning vinegar (made from corn, lol) is ~5%.Seems there are ways to concentrate it by progressively freezing at higher & higher temps +remove water crystals."Fractional Freezing" (apparently works on beer too!)https://t.co/kpp7xN52suhttps://t.co/WHlSHlnXFN

I don't understand why no one has tried to replicate that study for the current strains? That would fast track it to being put on the EPA's website, which seems to be what many people are referencing. All I see are a bunch of 'experts' all hemming & hawing without evidence.

"The ancient alchemists used to do this work in the coldest parts of winter."https://t.co/e2V8RgTJqf

I prefer "like farts" b/c people are familiar w/ avoiding them. But alas, back in April someone compared fart smell ( 0.0004 micron ) with viral size (0.06-0.14 micron) and completely neglected that spread is via droplets measured typically 0.1-900 micron. https://t.co/XgknxQCDcX

viral particle size from https://t.co/gIWODaDEv5cough particle size of healthy people fromhttps://t.co/zIgKASNom7Fart smell is based on methanethiol as a gas.

Back in march I couldn't find studies on coughing sick people at the time, much less covid associated mucus, the studies all seem to be on healthy people coughing. This looks like it might be comprehensive on that topic and includes a review on covid.https://t.co/FmGCPc6c57 https://t.co/Mpu4DYKuMw

What a fucking mess this whole aerosol business is.https://t.co/uBRzUJGMXc https://t.co/JrYyTkqYHk

Ok, so the issue seems to be how people define air bourn transmission? This seems to align with the notion from that it depends on how well the virus can survive in droplets and avoid desiccation.https://t.co/pad9VFtar7 https://t.co/LKm1z86QxV

That CDC article does seem to confirm that situations with poor ventilation and long duration can be problematic (tho not "effective air bourn transmission" per their definition). So that paper on people getting infected on a bus seems plausible.

Moral of the story, don't smell farts.https://t.co/Yns8zKUN6v

If destruction of virus lipid boundary is due to UV inducing heat energy to vibrate apart. As perhaps one method of actions for particle size to matter (larger particle, higher thermal mass to warm)... Does winter's low UV + cold mean it travels farther?https://t.co/i3lyWNwk5s

"spread of COVID-19 suggests that using arbitrary droplet size cutoffs may not accurately reflect what actually occurs with respiratory emissions, possibly contributing to the ineffectiveness"https://t.co/LQRFGGYqcrTL;DR: 6 feet considered harmful.https://t.co/g9JPf847ri

It seems I was right. Does that mean my mental model of 77 days still holds? I should check if we've updated how long someone can spread it if asymptomatic. https://t.co/qUhRCFvtBl

"But all of the experts we spoke with say that disinfecting and hand-washing every last item in your grocery haul is really not necessary. You might find it comforting to know that none of these experts are doing this themselves."https://t.co/X7k2P0AitHFucking experts.

Did they consider temperature of product and the type of packing material it was in? A plastic wrapped veggie in a cold section might have virus on the package upwards of a month. Possibly longer since study only on 20*c, not the typical refrigeration temperatures used in stores.

how did NPR go from "disinfecting and hand-washing every last item in your grocery haul is really not necessary." to "you don't need to disinfect your groceries"?Surely the experts are disinfecting surfaces that are known carriers of fomites?

Nature editorial goes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"Now that it is agreed that the virus transmits through the air, in both large and small droplets" https://t.co/ahF4pjL0vh

And another goes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ within the same 24 hour period."specialists can’t rule out the possibility of fomite transmission, and the guidance from many health agencies about how to deal with surfaces has been unclear"https://t.co/pSb40F8MP1
