Why do lifeless buildings get built? Not through some coherent process that generates ugly buildings but "more a kind of idiot consequence, coming from the confluence of effects that no one understood or thought out."

Damn this is all Frederick Taylor's fault. The guy who designed Ford's famous factory line and spend his life spreading his ideas of efficiency to explicitly destroy the tacit knowledge and personal skill and craft that used to define the production of goods and the environment

Then tore it apart to lower costs and increase managerial control: 1) Disassociating labor process from the skills. Labor must be independent of craft, tradition, and knowledge 2) Separating conception from execution 3) Gaining monopoly over knowledge to control labor process

Modern "property development" as a process and institution is the core driver of the structure-destroying garbage we build, rooted in the way development of buildings are treated as investments and financed by those with aboslutely no stake in the thing being good

So we've learned about Life and Feeling and the structure-preserving transformations, but how do we actually get these ideas out there and these techniques being used? Mimetics of course

Chris and co came up with all sorts of cool new processes, went to massive effort to try and get them used... but this massive effort is the sign they were going about it wrong:

Trying to take a completely new process and force it to be used is definitionally not a structure-preserving transformation, and NOBODY is exempt from respecting the unfolding

Though I will say, their approach sounds like the move: everyone in-house. Designers, contractors, engineers, all under one roof and with creative control to really craft a structure. This was unheard of in the building trades when Chris was doing his thing, still rare

Genes and living processes are both "small independent 'lumps' of coherent problem-solving information" that can propagate, be passed along, and evolve

The shorter the gene sequences, the more likely it is to get passed on. The shorter the living process the more it is to propagate socially among architects and builders.

This idea of sharing generic patterns that can intermix, call each other, and solve generic problems in specific context took the software world by storm in part due to his ideas in the 90s, and Chris notes these methods are juuuust starting to catch on in architecture

So what's the move? Define clear, detailed, rigorous sequences of living process for solving all manner of design and construction tasks.

He believes there are probably only ~2000 long sequences with ~20 subsequences each needed to heal the planet. So define about ~40000 sequences, innoculate the masses, then allow a few decades for fermentation!
