They’ve locked down New York, San Francisco. No other option I guess, the virus caught us with our pants down.

The information landscape is pure noise: official statements at odds with reports on the ground, death and infection rates being wildly speculated on by everyone from world leaders to reddit anons.

China's severe and immediate response (which by now makes a bit more sense) was recreated to some degree by its neighbors. South Korea, Taiwan, Japan are doing ok. But to say the Western governments fumbled is generous, implying some accident of poor luck and bad timing.

Politicians played politics: first denying then spinning the threat to keep panic down and markets up. Responses delayed for appearances, delays that are costing lives everyday

Italy got hit hard. Sorry, is getting hit hard. (Regular flights to Wuhan from China-owned factories in Northern Italy... but don't mention that, it's racist)

The markets, of course, immediately tanked and will continue to do so until further notice. You can't exactly just cycle the power on a perpetual motion machine.

Which will do more damage in the long run: the virus or the efforts to contain it? What does the Patriot Act: Pandemic Edition look like? What's a post-Corona America and world feel like? Only time will tell, though plenty of folks have thoughts they'll share if you listen.
