they don't want you to know this but the true purpose of ā€œnoble silenceā€ during meditation retreats is to prevent the spread of memetic viruses among the mentally ill

@ChrisChipMonk @slatestarcodex Cognitohazards are real and people should be trained to resist them (because we shouldn't restrict free speech due to fear of them)

@ChrisChipMonk @slatestarcodex Using this frame then, do you think the notion that we should talk more about our feelings over the past few decades could have actually served to spread depression/anxiety?

@elocinationn @slatestarcodex šŸ‘€ seems likely. for ex i think back pain is probably like this. (because: ā€œwhy is that emotional whatever that back pain commonly is *in the back* rather than anywhere else? for example, iirc in china depression manifests as *stomach* pain)

more importantly, i think it's possible to have *good* memetic viruses for example, i think a good coach will cause their clients to share the belief that ā€œall feelings are goodā€. the client can work through their stuff way quicker when they're not jumping away from it

@ChrisChipMonk @slatestarcodex The mimetic virus that attacks most millennials is the thought that old institutions are somehow more trustworthy or rewarding than new ones. I find baroque bank architecture the best transmission medium.

@ChrisChipMonk @slatestarcodex Reminds me of how they got people to stop streaking naked at sporting events. They stopped showing the streakers on TV. People forgot it’s a thing. I wonder if the same strategy would work to end America’s school shooting fad. https://t.co/Q2XSUl6njP
