Worth noting this has been going on since 2012 according to https://t.co/LkSupTRbRx (by way of https://t.co/x8GbhbMIlC from 2015)Even if this is just storing meta-data about an image's permissions in itself (for a DRM like system within site), can be leveraged by 3rd parties. https://t.co/5X6ygBkph2

My guess? Facebook trying to maintain distributed data consistency and image security by way of moving permission management closer to the point of origin. For a while there were ways to glean facebook's private images via a vulnerability in talked 2011: https://t.co/8OyBWs1I0c

Storing end-user content in CDNs is an inherent security vulnerability due to a wider attack surface. Tools that enable tracking to lock down data breeches could equally be used to perform large scale data tracking. This double edged sword shows up a lot. https://t.co/ZzTcQVfgiy

From where i'm standing, it is one of those situations where you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.I believe the worry over tracking is perhaps being blown out of proportion, but at the same time I'm not going to say it isn't worth considering as a threat vector.

On a meta-narrative level. I see the knee-jerk reactions to tracking as a sort of crowd level anxiety manifesting itself as a sort of collective action. A manifestation of a social group's collective egregore speaking to the swarm. Translation:https://t.co/AuRYQATQtF

At it's core, problem of not being able to trust 3rd party CDNs, and to a certain extent not even members of your own organization (past a certain level of scale, due to egress of bad actors/"spies"), is fundamentally an issue Homomorphic encryption helps with. Doesn't exist yet.

There are two other angles here that are worth considering as well: ease of use (a subset accessibility), as well as data loss. And then there is the fact that you can always just take a screenshot or photograph of a locked down photo - effectively a side channel attack.
