i think the worst mental habit i picked up from the way i played video games growing up was the idea that all mistakes can be avoided by a combination of looking up guides and save scumming. i think there is a part of me that expects this to work irl

playing games blind on β€œhardcore” would probably be good for my soul https://t.co/hLyNF5zssR

@QiaochuYuan one of the reasons i love chess is you can't go back, and regulating emotions in real time is vital, even as things sometimes go your way and sometimes don't. feels like great training :)

@danielbrottman i always avoided games that involved playing against other people growing up too πŸ˜… too stressful. i did play go for awhile in grad school

@danielbrottman it's got a very steep difficulty curve in the beginning so that makes sense to me, probably a big part of why it has a hard time catching on in the states πŸ˜…

basically the way i've structured my gaming experience my entire life is to minimize the possibility of experiencing a meaningful loss https://t.co/cZ8K6uByy3

when i was a kid i would play starcraft with all the cheat codes on because the experience of losing even a single unit was too painful for me to handle and that probably tells you more about the kind of person i am than i would like to admit

@QiaochuYuan I wonder if save scumming in games is a big part of why I have to contend with scarcity mindset - I don’t have infinite retries???

@exgenesis it's super scary that it's literally impossible to undo anything irl like things just stay happened forever

@QiaochuYuan I think this made me more of a naive consequentialist instead of initially basing my actions on values bc I was used to just checking both options and choosing the best instead of having to decide under uncertainty

@QiaochuYuan oh I thought this was specifically about the consequentialism vs values thing my guess is that bc the feedback loop in chess is so quick, it might not give you the desired effect - you probably want to play something where you live w your consequences for some time

@QiaochuYuan This is why Roguelikes have been my go to lately. The idea that losing is somewhat mandatory eases the idea that there is a right way.

@QiaochuYuan for what it's worth, there are a lot of "cheat code" type shortcuts irl that are very valuable, cf. @frideswyth 's wonderful article on becoming a contractor https://t.co/KWBcq4A8hQ same with "saving" finding places where you can fail without actual repercussions is powerful
