We have lived through something akin to The Great Renunciation, except instead of men renouncing interest in fashion it’s all of society renouncing interest in design. Buildings are boxes. Everything is in white or black. Mass degreebelization. (Reversal may be coming tho!) https://t.co/QWQKlDZZwi

@eshear Been wondering about this. Any theory for why? https://t.co/qrItYlWEu6

We used to carve creatures, gods, and people into building facades *everywhere* for thousands of years…until last century when we mostly just stopped. Now it would be seen as extravagant to cover a building in little beings. Why did our tastes change so quickly? https://t.co/QpWx5q6ZZp

@eshear One new theory I just made up: maybe today’s elite are specialized for global competition, which much more rewards efficiency, cost-cutting, etc and this is reflected in their aesthetic tastes even for their own homes, and they set the aesthetic for everyone else

@TylerAlterman - digital architecture and design are more profitable and hoovering up all the talent - anti-decoration aesthetic fashion trend (brutalism and descendants) has dominated top prestige design stuff - cheaper w modern techniques - more regulation = winners good at that not beauty

@TylerAlterman Paul’s theory seems reasonable too https://t.co/Wd6RyqX3dB
