We used to carve creatures, gods, and people into building facades *everywhere* for thousands of years…until last century when we mostly just stopped. Now it would be seen as extravagant to cover a building in little beings. Why did our tastes change so quickly? https://t.co/QpWx5q6ZZp
@eshear One new theory I just made up: maybe today’s elite are specialized for global competition, which much more rewards efficiency, cost-cutting, etc and this is reflected in their aesthetic tastes even for their own homes, and they set the aesthetic for everyone else
@TylerAlterman - digital architecture and design are more profitable and hoovering up all the talent - anti-decoration aesthetic fashion trend (brutalism and descendants) has dominated top prestige design stuff - cheaper w modern techniques - more regulation = winners good at that not beauty
