My most contrarian take is that, given the empirical results, the American government is actually very effective and well run on the dimensions that matter. It may look like we are led by bumbling malicious incompetents, but if so we’ve channeled their energy marvelously.

GDP isn’t everything of course, but it’s curious to note how rivals come and go but šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øis forever (ok and our allies seem to do pretty good too) Also Japan in 1990 holy shit am I right? https://t.co/NIrU5lih0p

It’s precisely because of all the comments by Americans below telling me I’m wrong and the government sucks that the system works. It is the ā€œdivine discontentā€ of the citizens which drives this process, and the freedom to express it openly!

@VividVoid_ I’d always thought that but I’ve come around to thinking the government those people create and choose actually does a pretty decent job.

@eshear When you look at each case up close (the FDA, or city governments, or the FBI) the corruption and ineptitude become blindly obvious. It's not just the American government that is failing - it's the entire blueprint of 20th century government. We're failing slower than others

@eshear Like the founding fathers, I will not accept merely good governance - I want government aiming for reason and founded on high ideals
