My most contrarian take is that, given the empirical results, the American government is actually very effective and well run on the dimensions that matter. It may look like we are led by bumbling malicious incompetents, but if so weāve channeled their energy marvelously.

Itās precisely because of all the comments by Americans below telling me Iām wrong and the government sucks that the system works. It is the ādivine discontentā of the citizens which drives this process, and the freedom to express it openly!

@eshear When you look at each case up close (the FDA, or city governments, or the FBI) the corruption and ineptitude become blindly obvious. It's not just the American government that is failing - it's the entire blueprint of 20th century government. We're failing slower than others
