It’s shocking how little wealthy families spend on education. What’s the ceiling, 100k a year per child? 200k? If you want an ultra elite private school and a tutor or two? No one plans years of systematic intercontinental journeys or optimizes acres of land or hires Aristotle.

Those who could pay many millions for something developmentally spectacular instead pay a couple million for a good version of typical that’s also very high status.

The point that “most people are actually pretty okay with public school” is really that “most people are actually pretty okay with a typical education”, and the “most” cuts right through class lines.

@mbateman I think it comes down to “people don’t know what’s best for their kids”. More charitably “are humble in assuming”, less charitably “are cowards and/or lost themselves”. Also less charitably “using their kids to compete for status”

Yeah. I don’t think the amount of wealth poured into an education is fundamental at all, to be clear, vs. how an education is approached. But for those who can throw money at it, for better or worse, it’s sociologically interesting how low the spending ceiling is. https://t.co/0U9sU4E2QX

@mbateman Some people do intercontinental journeys with some degree of intention, see world schooling or stuff like this that’s burgeoning https://t.co/NvbC3TTXyO
