this is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in cinema to me it’s the moment oogway denies tai lung the dragon scroll it’s a moment i understand. because it’s a moment when the exceptional child realises he has darkness in his heart https://t.co/w9ZSEmmxKr https://t.co/MnSBxqx4jj

what does an exceptional child do? when he has been told he has a destiny https://t.co/AlHWTNhqHN

that moment of wrongness is everything. it is hell. it is exile to hell. it is separating the child from his only basis for existence https://t.co/OX26l5WOVg

to have a stain on you. ā€œof darkness.ā€ with no tools to fix it if desperation breeds desperate choices, these children are the most desperate of all https://t.co/kM0CCAJUHF

oogway saw darkness in tai lung’s soul . he wasn’t wrong . but it was š˜øš˜³š˜°š˜Æš˜Ø of him to deny the scroll when oogway said no, and turned away, he cleaved reality, putting the barrier of ā€œdarkness in his heartā€ between tai lung and the dragon scroll https://t.co/bcMz2KZd3N

and tai lung had internalised that greatness was his destiny. that it’s why people cared. why people lived so oogway had just separated tai lung from his life

to a normal child, this would have been sad, devastating even, but not existential. it might not impact that secure attachment to the world. but for tai lung, this was his attachment to the world this was his basis for existence. his being in the world https://t.co/OX26l5WOVg

i don’t think oogway understood what he had done. i don’t think he would have done it the same way if he had

it can be simultaneously true that oogway was right to deny the dragon scroll . to protect whom he had to protect . and that there was a wrongness to it

it was š˜øš˜³š˜°š˜Æš˜Ø of him to not offer kindness after that. forgive him, for he was not perfectly enlightened https://t.co/QpTWgGk1MH https://t.co/5fsYHGdpTg

pity the others who are not infinitely kind to you, for they are not infinitely enlightened

> And Shifu had to destroy what he had created. > But how could he? shifu is literally humanised more than tai lung lol https://t.co/X8Mt5xfYGy

the movie chooses to humanise shifu, other oogway. to humanise po, other tai lung. these are fine cinematic choices for the movie they made: but it’s always worth noting:

who are the people depicted ā€œfundamentally like usā€ but made different choices? who are the ā€œother kind of peopleā€? https://t.co/jr04dMvHli

here’s the secret to when celebrities or other people tell you about an experience you cannot directly relate with: instead treating them as a fundamentally different kind of human being (ā€œwoah, i could never imagine that!ā€) https://t.co/25uDpEuqi6

@AskYatharth Great thread, one of the mysteries of being human: what to do with darkness you cannot (yet) metabolize?
