For as much as I use Twitter and Roam as my second brains, I know 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 at the end of the day it’s all so messy I can never substitute my first brain, and this was a gift of a lesson to learn thanks to being messy.

The lie of the second brain is your knowledge is somehow safe. It is never safe. It will always rot, and you can never not rely on your poor, messy, biologically evolved first brain.

What second brains can do—and do for me: Take the pressure off. Like writing down a list I’m struggling to remember, I still need to remember to look at the list, but all I need now is a handle there, and vague felt sense that if I need certain things, go look in the list.

Some people route thoughts straight into their Second Brain without having it pass through their First Brain and leave it changed. This is a mistake.

Exercise: Every day, purge one great thought from your mind. Let it go. Don’t write it down. Don’t try to record it. Just let it go. Vanish. And you come to realise—you can let go of great thoughts and still be okay.
