I’m trying to explain what about this hadn’t quite clicked the entire rest of my life.

It was some sort of agenderless ideal maybe? That of course, we should both be expressing interest, and playing roles in the exact same ways. If she wasn’t showing interest in the ways I was showing, she wasn’t interested.

To ask was to overreach. I had to, but it was weird.

I had the obligation to let others reject me who gave me the right to reject myself anyway? The trick is to do it in a way that’s kind.

It 𝘪𝘴 true that being asked out by a guy can be a source of trauma. It 𝘪𝘴 true that, every time a guy asks you out, there is a non-zero chance they will blow up on you for rejecting them, and physically or emotionally threaten you.

It 𝘪𝘴 true that getting rejected might make me lose respect for myself. It 𝘪𝘴 true that it might make me feel like an asshole. https://t.co/R6JaZAZZCW

To be part of the offending party and still have high regard for yourself doesn’t just make it easy for you—it makes it easier for them.

If you don’t want to hurt people (including yourself), one way is to nerf yourself. The other is to become powerful.

@AskYatharth our egos protect us, mislead us, restrict us, and inform us. Not having one isn't an option. Your thread is a great example of what you can do by playing with them and better understanding how it ticks. It's worthwhile.
