Most of the time, when people are excited to tell you stuff, you just need to ask them more about it.

> OMG I JUST XXXX You don’t need to respond a particular way. That’s not the point. Just ask a question. Let them talk more.

It’s almost obvious in retrospect. Too “excited.” Want to share. Excess energy. Just need to give space for it to be shared, in a way where you feel genuinely enthused, “YES THIS IS COOL” too.

It’s very different from something like shame, which is when a person shares something embarassing and sorta looks up at you 🥺 and your only job is to not really react that much and care and show empathy but be unmoved by it. It’s nbd, help release drama from it.

In all our reactions and shares, whether excited or embarassing, there can be that moment, when after a gush of sharing much, we stop and check to watch your partner and see if they’re tracking. Understanding the simple yet nuanced dynamics can help see clearly and feel freeing.

“Technique will free the actor.” The point of technique or this kind of analysis is not to be a rule, but rather to be a point of clarity, that lets you see more, whether it is the case and how it’s not.

(This is actually how all complex perception works—based on hierarchical differences from a mean. We recognise facial features by deviation from mean. Developing means helps us notice the differences more finely.)
