the interesting thing to me when i see people failing to do fact checking in their journalism is – i don't even really think about it in terms of politics or tech vs media or whatever – it's just... a willingness to be sloppy in your thinking indifference to reality https://t.co/vAw1iXXs0U

like – the more important it is to defeat an ideological opponent, the more important it is that you face the truth of reality, so you can hit them where it hurts trying to overwhelm with sound and fury is not a sustainable long-term strategy, and worse, it dulls your thinking

i get that people might say things like "oh I'm just doing my job and I'm under a lot of deadline pressure and mistakes happen" – like, ok... it's about your values, I guess. I would not tolerate allowing my mind to be sullied by a context in which sloppy thinking is tolerated

to be precise about *that*, there *is* a time and space for sloppy thinking – when you're ideating, doing back-of-envelope sketching, brainstorming, and so on. it is possible to "tweet sloppy" in a productive way but like... public record shouldn't be the place to be sloppy

if I were a bluecheck journalist type I wouldn't do my sloppy thinking on main, I'd have a separate alt for that a journalist's reputation for being precisely correct, and for correcting their errors, etc should be robust – held to a higher standard than regular folks

but anyway the reality here seems to be that news orgs like guardian etc will continue to play fast and loose with rigor because of the incentive structures they operate with/in. which basically means The Public Record has to be maintained by volunteers https://t.co/dQt0umDvIM

What's wild is, the media is arguably the primary means by which the public *is* educated. So what we have here is a case of a miseducated public further miseducating itself, via a process that is catalyzed by a misincentivized media [Quote from @alaindebotton's book, News] https://t.co/FB711gp7CZ

kind of funny to think that maybe the future of Actual Journalism will be a bunch of grumpy cats and anime avis and so on. You could argue that that future is already here https://t.co/uQobWgQ96Q

My wife would make a better journalist than 99% of journalists. But it’s bc she’s pathological about asking questions and demanding the truth. She’d probably get fired if she joined an actual newsroom, for asking too many questions. So some of the best journalism in 🇸🇬 looks like https://t.co/Hi3IGYLCp9

I feel like I haven't quite properly articulated what I'm surprised about basically i'm always surprised to notice that people don't think long-term and I know... it's hard. I don't think long-term for most things. my sleep/diet/etc are all trash but I feel like...

your reputation & the value of the work you've done compounds in a way that few other things do I think this is like my Peter Thiel-ish "secret" insight that the world around me continually seems to just completely ignore i don't know why this is, I don't know why this is rare

it's not like an ACTUAL secret, technically a whole bunch of people do get it, and historically there have been a bunch of people who have gotten it. but it's like... a form of literacy that somewhere between 0.1% and 1% of people have

(like, do you get what I'm getting at? it's not even about whether you are a good or bad person. it's like. do you want free power? here's how you get free power. why does hardly anybody want free power? while so many gripe about feeling powerless? because it's... scary...? 🤔)

times like this I have to work extra hard to try and be compassionate and sensitive to other people but I can't entirely shake the feeling that almost everyone is just kind of fucking around and not being serious about anything https://t.co/edxE7cP2pS

not my business to tell other people how to live their lives but if you're curious: I feel like lots of people mis-distribute their seriousness too serious about things you don't have to be serious about not at all serious about things you *ought* to be serious about 😂🤔

the moment I ship this sometime this month I bet my mood will shift dramatically and I will be back to being really breezy and chill and amused rather than frustrated and annoyed https://t.co/622LpIY5AE

been struggling with this 3+ years now, shit ah man, the relief that will come when it's done... [fantasizes] https://t.co/74AbohBkIf

the real issue, really, IMO, is that people aren't clear with themselves about what they really want. You don't have to want what I want. (That would be boring.) You have to decide what YOU want. Otherwise it will be decided for you. Hoping to go deep on this in @introspectvv

fuck me doing a thread about sloppy thinking 😩😩😩😩😩😩 https://t.co/wDKS62i5dG

@visakanv What upsets me is it's trivial to make the same case without using minimum wage misinfo.https://t.co/sEKcJn7sIB https://t.co/mRcSfROfMt
