Every blogger is a contributing volunteer historian. Every blog that gets deleted is a minor tragedy. Having participated in + observed some of these spaces for about 15 years, I’m continually startled at how fragile much of the enterprise can be

It’s amazing how much of everything just gets... forgotten. It several ways, it’s the people with the conviction and the resources to maintain archives, notes, etc who define the narrative. Even news/media orgs don’t do this as well as some might assume

if you keep a personal record of what’s going on & you index your notes, in a decade or two - and honestly sometimes in just 3-5 years - you can become a very valuable asset to any community: a sort of human switchboard for meaningful history. if you then take notes on your observations as you go (of the disparity between your memory and the reality), you will then have an approximate sense of what the fog of time is like. You can’t make it go away but you can sort of account and correct for it somewhat
