I have successfully trained the chipmunks to not be afraid of my voice. The bravest of the bunch (who's coat has more red in it) is also no longer skittish from me wiggling my fingers. https://t.co/IZIzX4s0qG

The smallest of the 3 still isn't to happy with me. Waves their tale and postures a bit upon seeing me. Still goes after the peanuts tho. That one is also bully and chases the others away. They behave like tiny squirrels IMHO.https://t.co/Qf3bgrxXtZ

I promise I am not going to get plague.https://t.co/znhfPQgmto

I closed the door because of some strong wind and they were really upset at me until I opened it a bit. https://t.co/hbPWEfJru4

I got them to jump on to a box where I am able to sit next to them just fine. I also got close to having them eat from my hand, but they freaked out seeing the food without the food dish.Ran out of walnuts. Going to have to restock and try again some other time. https://t.co/xXxnpab3FC

"Eastern chipmunks are not true hibernators as they are unable to build up a large enough fat reserve to sleep uninterruptedly through the winter. Instead, they wake periodically throughout the winter, usually on warmer days, to feed"https://t.co/YWcW3WOIKf Darn.

Now I have a bunch of chipmunks running into my house.I may have made a mistake. A happy cute little mistake.https://t.co/o3wzcO4awZ

"Nearly all spend at least part of the winter in a state called torpor. It’s a kind of intermittent hibernation in which temperature, heart rate, breathing and even brain activity drop dramatically."https://t.co/AesKr31lD1

I know how to dig underground complexes safely.I've been learning how to reinforce dirt walls.Been slowly going thru engineering manuals I find online that explore the principles and topics found here: https://t.co/lncOw43OwEI am become ant king.https://t.co/ReDYbKKIOL

They started pissing everywhere after an hour or so of no food. 🤬Time to close the door. https://t.co/w5E3sySXtF

They seem to be marking as they explore the room. They mark more once they are confident there isn't any more food - time dependent; seems to reflect their 'curiosity' (how often they sniff & stand on back feet)Turns out this is relatively novel behavior?https://t.co/RHOsaZ39l4 https://t.co/ClPQosjn1R

Why wouldn't we expect food site marking behavior? Mice do something similar with their trail development. And urine impacting scenting ability seems known since 1971.https://t.co/hFmKZgMIXv https://t.co/tge1XKOWIB

Looking up if rodents like golden showers."cigarette-butt wallpaper may not appeal to most of us, [...] plenty to be learned from observing the way animals use the entire outdoors like one big drugstore." 🧐https://t.co/8sQ9f1Eq9thttps://t.co/rLNJC4JJOC

How do I find out if the chipmunk is able to make baby?https://t.co/4tUZL2bmo4 https://t.co/BHcXWk1lkz

I also figured out I could recognize the difference by scars and very minor face markings + distinctiveness in the tail.Been naming 'em by location of the scars. So far I got one called "butt" and one called "shoulder"😂https://t.co/4L9MxnSmHX

Found the second boop in another recording. This was "butt"👉🐿️ 🥰 https://t.co/XSQok8nHEo

I bought a 20lb bag of feed to keep them from running around the house looking for food. Apparently they would do this to the neighbors even before I got them to run to the food bowl.Time to experiment with non-toxic deterrents. https://t.co/Tew2aiUOzP

I'm going to teach a chipmunk to understand certain words.https://t.co/wR45ZezFOl

This little one moves so much like chipmunk in behavior that I didn't even notice it was a new friend! The chipmunks don't bully this guy. https://t.co/7DzRHFPUZa

I've had to halt my experiments with the minibears because an actual bear has been tipping over the bear proof dumpster on the other side of the building.I was so hoping to find out if they pee'd on me.https://t.co/soPu2rp9hV

"And then what they'll do is they'll urinate on you because that's how they mark their trail. The thing you have to not mind, working with mice, is that you go home at night with a lot of mouse (urine) on you. My cat would be intrigued;"https://t.co/ATX9CNLy4a

Does anybody else wonder what microbes are in squirrel and chipmunk poop?https://t.co/T2QqiCkZW0

My google searches include how to feed poop to order rodentia.https://t.co/Sd9ry1ZHLZ

All I want is to be able to feed my squirrel friend and have it chill in my pocket.https://t.co/vLFbRnRgME

Hypothetically we may be able to recreate this effect if we can find or engineer a mucus dwelling microbe that produces this Glycoproteins for us.All the more reason to harvest squirrel poop.I also learned dried mushrooms store near indefinitely.https://t.co/MX4m5MnDdg

If I am able to pet the local squirrels next season, I'm naming one 'chief'. Short for handkerchief.I learn so many neat things scrolling thru @Tipsycaek's feed (and her's was named napkin).https://t.co/rDPWGiU9jP

Found a YouTube channel that teaches you how to observe and contribute citizen science about squirrels. So cool.https://t.co/eCSaFw652ghttps://t.co/H1d2ghns4t

Found someone who studies rodent poop microbes. I <3 twitter.https://t.co/c6JQXh4ALA

Chipmunks are called "Minibears".https://t.co/FKpovRsVgm

This is the greatest thing to me right now. A documentary about someone who rehabilitated an orphan baby squirrel. Its amazing how similar Sweden's forest are to Vermont's.I even saw a red squirrel around here!https://t.co/mkX3L8gbX3https://t.co/SJc4hochc3

hmm. HMMMMM.Is that a nisse making footprints in the snow? https://t.co/vAYbPCmchw

I learned that brown and fancy rats only live 2-3 years and now I am sad.https://t.co/Vq6p6LbxzMWild squirrels can live 30 I'm told. @an1lam https://t.co/X6qQoqCI5x

"Here, we reveal gut microbiome–mediated urea nitrogen recycling in hibernating thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus)." https://t.co/sNBN9xQsZQCute little bears :3https://t.co/JFaxfGgq91

A great lens for this is to look at how organisms manage in terms of stocks & flows. Inputs, outputs, and storage.I learned recently that bears recycle urea during hibernation and turn it into muscle/protein. Urea comes from processing fats. Store fats help them w/ insulation. https://t.co/zaBBRxyCJ3

If you gotta boil the mushrooms repeatedly to clean them further of neurotoxins like Gyromitrin. After drying...Maybe this is an alternative to having the neutralizing peptides that squirrels have?A lot of boiling to be done. https://t.co/E9czgYJU7Y

Bought a 9qt stockpot. Stainless steel isn't ideal, but it's light and will let me boil things for long periods of time (steeping tea for kombucha!) while still being able to cook with the instant pot.https://t.co/8hNMWUUfV1

Thinking a lot about how often I see chipmunks roll in good smelling dirt.I just mixed up a bunch of potting soil for the GF to grow some edible flowers. I wonder if we'll have frens digging in it :3https://t.co/xsssihRJO1
