One of the reasons I‘ve always been drawn to study fiction, marketing and philosophy is the following, non-judgemental observation: People care more about fictional characters than real people. It’s because fictional stories are told more skillfully, and framed better

You can get upset about this, or you can learn the art of framing and presentation. It might be the single most powerful life skill that my elders seemed to have the least conscious appreciation for https://t.co/VH6rqGXiBH https://t.co/nFcoMqZon0

A thing I noticed fairly early-ish on is that people care about things more once they’re framed properly. Like, if you watch a documentary about a pit crew or a kitchen or a tattoo shop, you become invested in those people’s struggles and you start to care about them personally https://t.co/ejLo5XAbUP

Elders worry, I think, that youths seem to prefer style over substance. And I think youths don’t really see a distinction early on, so it’s rational for them to invest heavily in style since it pays off massively in the short run. It’s all so clear to me https://t.co/sh1XiYSvoQ https://t.co/mlrcf4sPYP

So like, why haven’t we disambiguated this, as a culture? You don’t want your kids to be obsessive popularity-seeking-at-all-cost zombies with no values or principles - but you surely don’t want your kids to be social outcasts either. https://t.co/2MdtxhS1hH
