A thing I noticed fairly early-ish on is that people care about things more once they’re framed properly. Like, if you watch a documentary about a pit crew or a kitchen or a tattoo shop, you become invested in those people’s struggles and you start to care about them personally https://t.co/ejLo5XAbUP

@visakanv Roger Ebert's speech on empathy comes to mind. https://t.co/fbl7TNi5QF

And so like... witnessing this, I think I always thought... I want that! I want people to care about me. What I’ve been grappling with recently is whether that was some innate thing all along, or a response to perceived injustice. I *was* a pretty reclusive bookworm. Still am tbh

Once I witnessed this I could never unsee it. You can manipulate words to make things more valuable, seemingly creating value out of thin air. It’s “just” about better framing https://t.co/JVVPmc7RS5

Dumpster-diving for meaning https://t.co/0I8vEa0VjH

What I have taught myself to do, as a nerdy marketing guy who is philosophy-curious, is to invent status and social capital out of seemingly thin air. It can look like magic, but it’s just dumpster diving, like selling bargain-bin clothes at a markup on eBay, Girlboss style https://t.co/LQ3np6j11I

I think most people understand this when thinking about presidential candidates and campaigns. Elections can be won or lost because of frames. And... It’s something that affects personal livelihoods too. It can be a matter of life and death https://t.co/5Mu1g29bqJ

One of the reasons I‘ve always been drawn to study fiction, marketing and philosophy is the following, non-judgemental observation: People care more about fictional characters than real people. It’s because fictional stories are told more skillfully, and framed better

The internet is amazing. This author spent 14 years writing a book. Barely any sales in the last decade. His daughter makes ONE TikTok..and it gets 36M views. Now #1 serial killer book + #7 book OVERALL on Amazon. Just wild. Guarantee this made this man's entire life. https://t.co/BwKwBzmC8x

the lesson i took away from this class of observation is that you gotta make your own documentaries https://t.co/x9lmLz7Qk5

WWE fans who didn't like Maven as a performer, now like him because he's open and honest about his experience the lesson i take away from this is to get good at telling your own stories https://t.co/keMm2UMmDG

leaving out the years that he worked at AMD and LSI is a great eg of how a lionizing narrative works. it creates the impression of superhuman genius, which confers a valuable aura that has material impact on morale, negotiations, etc. Similar to “Singapore was a fishing village”

@visakanv *just*? It's a skill similar to seeing the forest, not just the trees. It only becomes dangerous when you detach it from reality. Also when you "make up" stories about past or current, instead of painting a picture (w/ scaffolding) of what the future can be.

@visakanv https://t.co/t0HT1ycRga

@visakanv Similiar vibe: The Holy Moment https://t.co/BWdacQZ17b (from Waking Life)

@visakanv Here is a recent one I’ve noticed on Facebook... and who knows, maybe it’s true, but it’s starting to seem like a trend to trick people into caring... “We’re closing 😢” Wish I’d taken screenshots of others I’ve seen. https://t.co/r7bi84trEM

@visakanv Another are these meme accounts on Instagram that comment on each other’s posts saying things like “wtf you steal all of my posts!” And then the OP replies “yea you’re right, sorry bro...everyone go follow this person, I get a ton of my shit from them lol” Fooled me the 1st time
