what would you tell your child, when she asks about the ruins? "they must have been a great people, my love, to have built such great artifacts." "then why are they gone?" "I do not know." "was it something bad?" "perhaps. I do not know." "that's scary!" "it is." https://t.co/Ueqn9lN3Za

While the Virupaksha temple has been alive with worship since the 7th century, Hampi’s ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire are mysterious and magical even today. https://t.co/VJNijgQ4sl

Ruins of the Parthenon (1880) by American landscape painter, Sanford Robinson Gifford. From the NGA, "Gifford referenced his precise portrayal of light and atmosphere by deeming the completed work "not a picture of a building, but a picture of a day."" h/t @archaeologyart https://t.co/g7cZBtcG5Y

This is an older painting by Canaletto, in 1742 you may notice the arch seems to be in worse condition than in later paintings – this is because Pope Pius VII got Giuseppe Valadier to restore it in 1821 https://t.co/FdQqEa6z66
