broke: relying on opaque Twitter algorithm to find new people to follow
bespoke: directly perusing follower graph of interesting people to find new people to follow
Several people asked me for a way to interactively explore visualizations of Twitter networks (especially with search). Here it is: https://t.co/ckxuhNnf02
Features:
- 2D and 3D
- Search
- Zoom, pan, etc
- Includes names and bios
- Multilevel communities
- Mobile (2D) https://t.co/foBeeEjDDd
Basic methodology: grab followers with Twitter API, import into Gephi, filter out accounts with >100k followers, compute "Modularity", color code based on modularity, size nodes based on in-degree, layout with ForceAtlas2.
As promised, I've added a new graph to Twitterverse:
https://t.co/waGp0I0vYo
Rats, etc: 'rationalist', 'post-rationalist', 'critical rationalist', 'meta-rationalist', etc accounts. Generally, these are accounts who know what SlateStarCodex and LessWrong are. https://t.co/Qo1OYAtmUm
It's fun to play "identify the communities". Any help in the ones I can't identify or mess up are appreciated. Suggestions for accounts to do next are welcome. PM me if you want any of the Gephi files.
Considering making a x-rationalist-adjacent-sphere map. Looking at my own follow graph clusters for prudent seeds. If I chose 2-3 people from each of these divisions, what would I be missing? How is it biased? https://t.co/NrZ62Dzuq5

Cryptocurrency, blockchain, Bitcoin, smart contracts, decentralized finance, cryptotrading, and, yes, a bit of cryptography too https://t.co/SnbXE8PfS7
I've done a lot of Twitter graphs now, many with overlapping communities. They show many angles, but there has been a lot of repeated characters.
Whose graph would somewhat match my interests (see ones I've done), yet reveal new communities?
Suggestions below please
Dark tangerine:
Also central. Some of these accounts appear to be core postrat (to me at least)
@literalbanana @eigenrobot @sonyasupposedly
@nosilverv @ResonantPyre @metadiogenes
@mechanicalmonk1 @mauve_sky @XmasTreeTara (rip?) https://t.co/j7NEgvij4r
New interactive graph on https://t.co/ckxuhNEPRA
Frogtwitter, etc https://t.co/PNHTuvE3Ne
Frogtwitter, 'alt-right', 4chan-adjacent humor, NRx, r/acc, America First conservatism, etc. https://t.co/soS5UtmgCH
For those asking about the code for this, or a public version: it's not easily automatable right now. I'm doing it in a semi-automated way with https://t.co/d5rcL9X5l0 and https://t.co/NLn3VcxZ5T https://t.co/8cCn893epH
Here's what multilevel communities look like. The graph gets smaller and easier to read at higher levels. Notice that the colors are consistent between levels. (The orientation isn't, currently. I.e., it might be rotated or flipped between the levels.) https://t.co/9gkWDkfb6N
@goblinodds @astridwilde1 there is an automated naming process followed by manual fixing. the automated naming process is dumb relative to what's possible. in this case the name was fixed by a human.
source: am that human
Network viz of everyone @visakanv follows who have <10k followers: 1347 accounts, with 72,864 follows between them.
--Full res links with zoom--
with edges (hairball, but interesting):
https://t.co/1Qi5ZzzlFM
without edges (easier to read):
https://t.co/geveSpoup2 https://t.co/dtUT0Wn0CV
Inspired by @visakanv's idea to amplify smaller accounts, I have an experiment. I combined the graphs of a few accounts in similar niches and aggressively filtered it to only the smaller, niche accounts.
Dodger blue:
@DeityOfReligion @DiscipleOfOrder @ProofOfLogic
@St_Rev @drethelin @niftierideology
@Aelkus @AuerbachKeller @CTZN5
Includes all the weird-sun accounts, and more. Not sure what unifies that "and more" part, but they appear to be central https://t.co/q7TIBkgFPD
I should say, these graphs are easy to make it's just a slight pain. You don't have to be a super hacker. Just get a Twitter API key https://t.co/6WOdSd1x2G, run Nucoll, paste your keys, wait an annoying amount of time for it to grab, then load up into Gephi and play with it.

Seed accounts:
@hillelogram @pressron @HeidyKhlaaf @larsr_h @alastair_d_reid @siderealed @intoverflow @parlar https://t.co/VqppqHtOrn
When you click a search result it will take you to the node. (In grouped mode, it will also scroll to the account's location in the list of accounts in the supernode) https://t.co/rsXaG6xtOk
Of course, there is a ton of overlap between all these groups. But, in particular the dodger blue and dark tangerine appear to overlap a ton in my opinion. In the 2D graph they appear kinda disparate. But, if you look at 3D they're adjacent.
A realistic case where 3D excels https://t.co/bmc2rTTPR2
Fields medalist Voevodsky on his "spiritual" experiences.

Deep sky blue and liver both appear to be meditation-interested. One subset of the liver maybe being deeper into Buddhism in particular.

Accounts are put into communities which are then merged into supernodes (one supernode per community). The process then repeats at higher levels: communities are found among the supernodes, then all the supernodes of a community merge into a supersupernode.
New interactive network visualization on Twitterverse
Leftists, etc: https://t.co/YECQiXPRvJ
Accounts lean farther left. Tried to get even distribution of socialists, communists, anarchists, and others. Probably biased towards literary crowd https://t.co/EFjnIu3Avn
Here's what 3D looks like. You can fly around with keyboard controls. (No 3D on mobile yet, sorry). Everything works similarly to 2D mode. https://t.co/HhvdrUPwF4
Reminder to take community detection algorithms with a grain of salt. Here are three different algorithms, each with 2 or 3 different granularities. (Colors aren't consistent between graphs; just compare shapes the colors make) https://t.co/NuAq658kJ4
The codeword to indicate you're a member of the secret postrat society is "postrationality isn't a real thing. it's just a term a few bloggers made up lol"
Be on the lookout
@astridwilde1 @goblinodds the algo is currently based on follows and to a lesser extent lists. gwern/banana have been around for a long time collecting valuable follows.
if our algo took more interactions into account then i'm sure the top would look different
When I brought up the idea for making this graph I was reminded to include the critrats. They indeed show up clearly (huddled around @DavidDeutschOxf, of course)

Instead of total algorithm customization, or selecting from a preset collection of opaque ones (e.g. being discussed for Twitter), why not intuitive algorithmic adjustability
I want to crank up the serendipity knob
