It's so funny that poison/toxin/venom is just shapes. You imagine them as like acid or heat or something, a physically destructive thing in some fundamental way but no. They are just the wrong shape and fit into places they shouldn't because of the shapes you have

@adam_kranz @norvid_studies There is this an interbacterial warfare system where one bacteria uses a needle to inject a molecule that looks very close to an important signalling molecule that bacteria use to control physiology but its electronic structure makes it sticky inside the enzyme pocket

@adam_kranz I think about this a lot. Venom can be so strange and complicated and ultimately it's just some weird geometry that kills things.

@adam_kranz but they bend and wiggle in particular ways that are just as important as the shapes

@Silicon_alien The ways they can bend and wiggle are the result of their shapes too

@adam_kranz technically physically destructive things are also just the wrong shape, but at an even smaller scale

@adam_kranz hmmm but the size that they are wrong shaped matters for classification purposes eg asbestos is bad for you but its big — its not really a poison, the mechanism of action is different

I spent the entirety of Biol 1140 this spring telling my kids "it's all just shapes" and I suppose none of them got it but maybe one day they will remember.

neuropeptides are just one example but it's funny when drugs are just…signals (as opposed to e.g. an antibody that blocks a receptor). it's close to being a magic spell — just say "abracadabra" at your brain in the right chemical language and you won't want to eat anymore!

@adam_kranz + the other side of germ theory is terrain theory. every perspective (human body) is like a kaleidoscope. certain shapes (pathogens) appear with certain configurations of the kaleidoscope (the bodies terrain/microbiome/mucus lvl/acidity/emotional state/ etc)
