i get it now, this is legit. reddit objects are objects recommended to _entry-level enthusiasts_ by topical subreddits because they work well to improve lives over baseline with a relatively low level of effort for a majority of cases reddit objects are high ROI! for example,

@eigenrobot I don't think this is true for the cast iron pan, and in some way for the leatherman if you rarely need it. For me reddit object is more like, the conclusion from someone whose life is centered around such an object. In some cases optimal, in some case not at all (cast iron)

@eigenrobot To put a negative spin on it, it's like extracting information from experience without the tacit knowledge, and the risk is having a tool that is justified by the tacit knowledge itself rather than by the information

@eigenrobot It's like, on one end you have the cast iron pan of someone really dedicated to the craft of cooking, on the other the slow cooker for a Gwern-type person that tried to optimize as much as possible this aspect of their life, and like, you want the 2nd one, but maybe not the 1st

r/strength_training reddit object yeah i know other forums came first but its quintessential is it right everywhere? does everyone need to be doing squats all the time? does it ignore aesthetics? who cares! way better than default gym behavior https://t.co/MFYgC8Dwdr

another example. r/malefashionadvice reddit objects for casual and business dress unfortunately yeah all are not what they used to be and yeah those jeans should be selvedge https://t.co/EKhleTbDI3

what does a reddit object _signal_? to varying degrees: "i am a superficial enthusiast or a dabbler" "i want moderately nice things and have put some effort in over basline" "i care about this but i am not an obsessive freak" "i am an entryist"

an old joke is relevant here casual fan: the band's best album is their best album serious fan: actually the band's best album is their second worst album why might an obsessive scorn casuals, as identified by their enjoyment of a reddit object? several reasons

@eigenrobot Obligatory reference https://t.co/d8j14IkE0j

the basic truth is that entryists will always ruin your subculture and need to be gatekept or at least put in their place until they demonstrate by costly signalling via obsessive study that theyre not gonna wreck your shit because theyre fucked up in the same way you are https://t.co/nIEJQT8hsC

i guess that's actually just one reason https://t.co/IOAGSuQ2df

monogatari has solved this problem ofc. but at what cost https://t.co/uQzEHGgcll

@eigenrobot The thing about optimizing is that if we all do it, we become cookie cutter copies of each other. A Reddit object is the optimizer’s choice. But the optimizer loses their distinctiveness in the process, ironically usually believing themselves to have exceptional taste. https://t.co/ew1ejHhyj2

@eigenrobot sounds like a premium mediocre tool https://t.co/o9iG1wctad

@eigenrobot Interesting interpretation; I took it as more like objects that are good but also overly fixated on vs. other (maybe equally viable) options due to in-group feedback. https://t.co/tLbgXlAdJr
