When I was CEOing at Twitch one of the thing I’d do every batch of interns was a very short presentation on the origins of the company and then a Q&A. One of the questions was always, “Where should I work and what job should I get, or should I start a company?”

It’s an interesting question to try to answer for an intern I didn’t really know, because of course the actual answer is dependent on that person and their life. So I had to figure out how to articulate the framework I used.

@eshear There's also payment in the not-the-work aspects of the job, eg the office environment, the people there, location, culture (leave at 5 vs party at 9 -- both have their benefits), and perks (having to drive for lunch vs cafe makes you curse the job much more).

@eshear to me the heuristic for "when should I start something" has always been "when you're thinking about it 10 times per day" at that point you're already mentally there, might as well eject and do it

@_ilmoi Both of my first two companies were started because Justin and I wanted to start a company and started looking for an idea rather than bc we had an idea we felt compelled to do.
