Alcohol is a prosocial drug with massive upsides - the engine of civilization since ancient Egypt - and we should be thinking more about establishing the kind of norms and social wisdom that allow us to benefit from its upsides without succumbing to its downsides ā€œBut alcohol leads to problems as well.ā€ That’s a skill issue.

@ClickingSeason Has any anti car guy made the argument that reliance on cars means the working class can't be blasted half the day everyday? It could work

@ClickingSeason As a cider appreciator, one huge benefit to alcohol is preservative effects. A bottle of juice naturally fermented into cider or wine is shelf stable for years. In fact it takes a lot of energy and intervention to prevent this from happening!

@ClickingSeason @tszzl mostly it’s that it slows me down. i like kava; or a quad espresso ~ would probably rather do cocaine or ecstasy or acid or mushrooms than drink - more intimate plus i keep my sharpness talking to people who are drunk is really disappointing as an intellectual and artist sorry

@ClickingSeason Yes, and there's a reason why wine, in particular, is at the heart of the most significant ceremonies in many cultures.

@ClickingSeason Eh. It's major benefits have been superceded by coal and refrigeration. Once spoilage has been largely solved, stimulants like tea and coffee are far more valuable to load up on.

@SereneDesiree I've heard that it is because in low doses/concentrations alcohol triggers human-bonding mechanism in the brain https://t.co/5MQS83HXgk
