Managers in the U.S. are not blessed by a cultural substrate which broadly inculcates dignity. It’s difficult to delivery consistently, but like paychecks, you owe it to your employees to deliver it consistently. Come hell or high water.

I will make the obligatory disclaimer that all cultures change over time and one of the Society Is Falling Apart worries in Japan in the last ~3 decades has been “People these days don’t really believe a broom pusher at Toyota *works for Toyota* with all that entails.”
