@eshear the undersea portions of the African plate are subducting beneath the undersea portions of the Eurasian Plate, driving back arc volcanism that gives rise to Italy, Greece, and the mountains of Turkey. it's more obvious if you look at seafloor maps. https://t.co/76q5wHnwMF
