reminds me of a chat with a 13yo cousin where we were talking about parenting and she had the classic teen insight of "wait they let just everybody be parents with no training? there should be a license!" and my sister & I said "but who would get to say what a good parent is?" and she was like "well it could just be obvious stuff like don't hit your kids" and we were like "but 100 years ago it would have been obvious stuff like DO hit your kids" and she was like "oh shit. huh." iow a licensing is only as good as you trust the people making the licensing to approximate what goodness is and also to not overreach beyond what's really relevant
