Incidentally, this is often elided in discussions of America being a high trust or low trust society. Because of course America really is a country where someone, who turns out to be a lawyer for a federal regulator, can find himself in a pinch needing The Majesty Of The Law.

There are many countries where this “transaction” fails to clear, as someone demands a bribe, as someone assumes they are being scammed, as a banker attempts to clear riffraff from the premises, etc etc.
