"normie" is really the wrong word for the concept. The problem isn't that they're norm*ies*, it's that they're norm*ers*. In the problematic context it's actually you who is the normee.

@forthrighter @univrsw3th4rt that's part of it. there's an extra dimension about norm visibility. normies enforce norms by making them invisible. weirdos don't necessarily engage in norm legibilisation

@RichDecibels @univrsw3th4rt weirdos are maybe just outside of norms. Not enough critical mass to create new ones, unengaged with prevailing ones, but not in a "trailblazer" kind of way, in a "not big enough to be a sway" kind of way

@forthrighter @RichDecibels @univrsw3th4rt I believe autistics not understanding “social norms” is the paradigmatic example. They’re weird because they’re neurodivergent, but in certain over-represented fields they have enough mass to change norms in those areas.
