I generally try to stay clear of giving people “you should do this” type of advice, but I think one thing I do wanna push for is: you should try to get your ass out of your hometown, to somewhere on the other side of the planet, ideally in your early 20s. Save up, spend a month

I had a colleague who advised me to do this when I was about 24, 25. I was like yea yea sure someday. I finally did it when I was 29 and I wish I had done it 10 years earlier. It just expands your sense of reality, and possibility, and the way you look at culture, everything

for most of human history this was an impossibly difficult thing to do. yit’s still one of the most eye-opening, mind-opening, heart-opening experiences available to people if you want it. it’s safer and more affordable than ever and yet it still takes some courage and chops

you could be the most boring guy in your hometown, but when you go to a bar halfway across the planet you’re instantly one of the more interesting people in it, just by virtue of being from far away. Experiencing that can permanently shift your self-image, even after you return

@visakanv Yep. You really only have your early 20s to get the full dose of that experience and it pays dividends for a lifetime. Lived and worked in the UK for 7 months at 23 and it was foundational.
