I find explaining any actually interesting idea usually requires explaining like 5 subsidiary ideas. If you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky it’s like 25 and either they’re ready for a three hour lecture or you’re not going to succeed.

it’s a different 5/25 ideas for everyone you talk to depending on their background and assumptions, so if you want to succeed you have to spend a lot of time probing.

This is why finding marginal ideas is so powerful…one of those 5-25 ideas is something most people are both ready to understand without preamble and leads to other interesting stuff.

@eshear I have one interesting idea: what fucks up people's dating lives is a preoccupation with the maintenance of their symbolic social identity but I'm writing a 15-chapter book about it because I have to explain everything from mimetic desire to dating app selection bias to feminism
