Bank: Can you get us account statements of all of your bank accounts to underwrite the mortgage? Me: *sigh* And this is why collecting checking accounts is eventually a painful hobby. Bank: What. Me: What. Bank: How many are we talking about? Me: I have cut down recently. Only 40
I’m not a pathological pack rat border, I swear! But various factors about running a business and living in two countries would balloon the number even if I did not have a weird-but-explicable habit of keeping many accounts available just in case.
“Weird but explicable?” Back in the day U.S. banks would occasionally decide to exit the business of foreign-resident Americans and as I was one and needed U.S. banking I made a few backups just in case then… didn’t reverse that decision.
Fun fact: it is occasionally useful to know who are the employees that happen to have an account at lots of places in case you need a personal account to test money movement. I think someone kept a list of Stripes who also had my weird hobby, just in case.
There was also a Slack channel once upon a time which might have been the most likely place in the world to quickly answer the question "Do we know anyone who banks at Redneck Bank?" (The U.S. has thousands of bank and yes that is absolutely one of them.)
