the indigogo for my "Open History of Education" project is live! full pitch + page for donations are linked in the next tweet my goal is raising $12,000 so i can prioritize finishing this by the end of 2024! rest of the thread explains project deets and motivation https://t.co/cXuMuUklYI

tl;dr of the project: i'm making an online annotated edition of John Gatto's "The Underground History of American Education" with all the sources embedded alongside the text (hyperlink all history!) + writing additional essays like these indiegogo link β https://t.co/WRrtIL7sdJ https://t.co/C7lneRlnsv

@'s for everyone who asked to be notified about the launch! @quotidiania @zencephalon @schlagetown @arabelladevine @sonikudzu @hermitfriend @CollinLysford @FluidityAudio @imhinesmi @harleyraygray @NassauAlex @dorzacht @protomneme https://t.co/Hzl21kAMG6

Gatto's history goes deep but the central premise is simple: forced schooling was created to make people easier to control. this happened not by chance, nor systemic failure, but because well-resourced people with specific aims put in the work to make it so (quote, Gatto) https://t.co/9yvxirvvqX

video tl;dr for those more auditorily inclined π https://t.co/CYk9z7Ek9z

"Why does the *history* matter?" basically, despite having lots of opportunity to notice how school hurts people, it was only learning the history that dissolved the "as if" in a way that let me integrate my compartmentalized understanding of things https://t.co/XjuxDhuMOC

basically, Gatto's book had the effect of moving me from, "wow, it's almost *AS IF* school was designed to teach obedience while making learning hard" to "oh... that was basically the original plan and generations of key players were v articulate about it... WTF"

there's also some really surprising stuff in the history! "erudite academic anti-intellectuals who think literacy is lame" was something i never would have guessed could actually exist https://t.co/T2q8Bm4383

Underground History β Open History Gatto's history isn't "underground" in the sense of being controversial, or covered up. @aspaglayan is a contemporary academic with great work on the topic of mass schooling as control https://t.co/PrL8lm7xr4 https://t.co/tmXeqxTrM4 https://t.co/3tTeVV2SY9

the history of mass schooling is "underground" in the sense that it hasn't made it's way into common knowledge in most circles it doesn't need to be that way. you can talk about it, you can point to concrete chains of evidence, this can be made Easy https://t.co/EDLtnWdHiI

"Why does it matter that people understand this history is straightforward to verify?" if you are like me, even though you're a largely auto-didactic terminally online weirdo, you've still absorbed a lot of fake "blackpill of unknowability" https://t.co/WMUbsBGuoH

when i'd hit a WTF claim, i'd have a sinking feeling that it would Simply Be Too Hard To Investigate and get any conviction one way or another. i assumed massively implausible levels of unknowability, but kept digging and kept being surprised how well documented history is

The pitch is basically a full-length blog post and dives deeper into Why This All Matters than I can get in tweets. even if you aren't interested in funding the project i highly suggest reading it! https://t.co/dsG8PwC1x8

more deets on the Final Product https://t.co/WnbTvbftym

THIS ROCKS!!! we're at 14% in the first 3 hours this is the first crowd funding project i've done, it feels quite spooky to ask for money to make something yall will enjoy, starting strong has really helped make this real π₯π₯π₯π₯° https://t.co/c0281FhmDP

if your stone mind is unmoved by history, your iron heart unswayed by my earnest exposition of what i care about, your steel wallet closed to the spirit of Open Access, you can also give me money because the perks are funny and delightful https://t.co/Uf71UgMWJS

Rad β€οΈβπ₯ I've got no idea what to expect from crowd funding stuff. Like do things do the most at the beginning and peter out? Ramp up? anywho, thank you to everyone who helped get me to almost 1/4 of the way on the first day βΊοΈ https://t.co/iLlVFtsh9i

lit, 5 more people and $500 more since last night! interestingly, this has been doing better monetarily but worse twitter-engagement-wise than i expectedπ€ https://t.co/Azgb7PuN1J

hmmm, my Spidey senses are saying I set of some algo tripwire with links or something, the pattern of likes for this thread feels v off rip that there's no way to 100% tell if it was happenstance or algo thing might redo the launch thread? feels gauche, but probs worth

decided to just keep on threading π₯ https://t.co/PwSdNusqFG

sketching out the "assault on the alphabet" post for the Open History of American Edu project tl;dr 100 years ago in the us it became mainstream to not teach kids the alphabet while trying to teach them to read. this is as bad an idea as it seems and literacy has suffered for it

OVER HALF WAY THERE π₯°π₯°π₯β¨π₯ there were some absolutely baller donations yesterday, several people pitching in to the middle tiers and one mega-donations from a patron so benevolent and so shadowy they didn't even claim a Rockefeller https://t.co/7ukrw0ZzI1

progress marches slowly on! if you haven't seen this yet checkout the summary in the qt and rest of this thread, search your soul and learn if you desire to help me make something great https://t.co/v37H64gu6w https://t.co/vfcHcFZiRP
