Just learned Burlington is going to put up "pod" houses to help house homeless people. In seeing what @UPENDTHIS & @PalletShelter is building, the first thing I thought was "I bet that would fit on a trailer".Then I got on twitter to write about it, and this is in my feed.šŸ˜ https://t.co/MmbhYZwolK

Tent + floor. Rain and water proof. Survived the winter with a standing oil heater.Had to knock snow off and wind make it very loud sometimes cuz the tarp. But was warm and dry.We fit a cot, a 6ft folding table, and a laptop cart with two 3d printers.https://t.co/ZkxcHSTqkC https://t.co/s3DskzKIJc

@caroncreighton We ended up using an ice-fishing hut tent on a platform. We spent less than $1000 including the oil heater. The ones in burlington cost $5500+ each apparently https://t.co/IyjQHt004Uhttps://t.co/Axc7YCcXJu

Looks like oakland CA's cabins cost $15k each. Not sure if that includes site prep or property. Kinda funny we could shelter 30 people for the same price. https://t.co/GdEvgfGOsjThose cabins look better in terms of insulation + being able to sleep during winter storms & wind.

We were going to do the hexayurt design ala @leashless's ideas. but we struggled to get insulated panels reliably and were concerned about snow load. This was a compromise and ended up being relatively competitive price wise https://t.co/FHCg6zLiyRhttps://t.co/wxIXwdW4nG

A short term emergency shelter for disaster should be way cheaper. But IMHO a bunch of 6 month winterized shelters w/ snow load ability should still be way cheaper than what is currently being implemented. https://t.co/e5Xc6sUiFT

Given costs of flooring/siding/insulation an A frame style roof, we estimate $4000-ish if we just used 4 of these as structural support & w/ cheap coroplast outer walls and some real shed structural flooring. https://t.co/j3yCqzxnyHDouble as space for a bed & standing desk.

The only tarp we could get that was 16ft wide was also 24ft long. Had a lot of slack that waves in the wind. Didn't have time to do any modifications. The bungie cords we used seemed to hold up to the cold and helped w/ vibration. Will explore scalloping.https://t.co/Gmz1MFtK0c

@ultimape The tarp noise needs scalloped edges etc. it’s hard to stop but it’s a question of materials and rigging. Big tarps with scalloped edges are common at burning man etc.

Solved the tarp noise problem for the summer by getting a Shade Gazebo on sale & using some blackout curtains that seem to handle outdoors well enough. Cut the temperature from 30*f+ above ambient down to a mere +8*F.Added cost? $280 (incl box fan) https://t.co/KeoxAAwxYW

We used pool noodles to allow us to slide roof on without recking the fabric. Also let us avoid needing a step ladder to build it out from the center. (Will also do the same to take off for winter.)Highly recommend gazebo. Well designed at a good price.https://t.co/iEJJpIzflL

The more that is spent, the worse it gets, because the money doesn’t go to the homeless, it goes to the hundreds of ā€œcharitiesā€ that then treat the homeless as sources of revenue. The more homeless there are, the more money these organizations get, so their incentive is to increase, not decrease, homelessness! Whatever you incentivize will happen.

It’s approaching the point where a shack in the woods has roughly the same level of critical services as a real house: wireless internet or Starlink, solar, water filter, wood stove. What more do you need really?

If you can afford to do it, metal mesh screening from tractor supply is a good idea to keep rodents from living under shed-like structures. Cuts well with aviation sheers. Otherwise this style flooring held up relatively well. https://t.co/AqoOfW4aGL

Also worth noting: window reflections can act like magnifying glasses and melt tarps. Luckily nothing burned, but it ruined some 4x8 boards due to water seeping in from the holes. Also ruined a bunch of tie downs. Explains why no plants grow there, and why the siding is deformed.
