as soon as the sun became relevant to my life — when i started using it to tell where north was, while in my convertible driving or walking — i started having a sense for where it was. i could look at the reflections on a tree on a cloudy day and somehow know where the sun was

as soon as the moon became relevant to my life — when it was the only thing lighting the forest i sometimes visit my life — i started having sense for what phase the moon was in. it was a practical truth

i knew the moon phases by the way the forest i knew looked different in it, the way the animals sounded, just a touch different

i live on the cycles of the moon, but also—i have the stolen light of the moon shining in my pocket at all times: it’s my smartphone flashlight. like prometheus stole fire, my phone can light the way with glarish white light anytime

it was not necessary, perhaps not even appropriate, for me to know of the sun or moon before this. they were not relevant to my modern life. it only became relevant when i began driving without live directions. i began walking at night in places without city light

before that, i lived on the stolen powers of the magnetic compass in my phone, the GPS satellites in the sky, the electricity running through street lights, offering the navigation and illumination our ancestors counted on from the sky

my main “meditative” practice is spending at least 1hr a day sensorially checking in with the rhythms of local nature this looks like: walking, saying hi to the local crows, touching lots of plants, attuning to the seasonal shifts in the trees & sunlight & smell of the air https://t.co/gwQrhx1WoR
