The further I get into parenting the more it seems like the entire world is one giant conspiracy to rob a child of affordances in every meaningful domain of life

I generally don’t like that “hard times > strong men > good times > weak men” meme, but if you think specifically about the way we offer “good times” to childhood it starts to feel semi-plausible

Leisure is allocated to youth, disproportionately compared to other life periods, and in a padded and low calorie way that alienates them from real valuing. And then of course they become alienated grownups.

My considered view is that the problems with childhood are *not* driven by emergent structural historical factors like this. Childhood’s deterioration is more downstream of (adult) ideology and culture. But the pattern fits so well that it probably merits more thought.

@forshaper Variants on what I said above If you think there the cultural gravity of agency is decaying, changes in childhood could be downstream of that (as well as upstream)
