A thing I’ve been thinking about lately re: Dune is how effectively Herbert points out the usefulness of having many names. Paul Atreides, son of the Duke, Muad’dib, the Lisan al Gaib, Usul to his close friends. It’s all the same human being, and they’re all different people

For a more simple and intuitive example: sometimes Leo calls Josiah Bartlett “Jed”, and sometimes he calls him “Mr. President”, and it’s a meaningful choice each time https://t.co/MC3X2ax49g

lately noticed that my wife and i now sometimes call each other mummy and daddy, not directly, but as a proxy, like Leo using "Mr. President": to signify that we are addressing each other as parents and not as spouses/lovers. i put some affect on it https://t.co/Hvl9k9tawQ

@visakanv This is also why I struggle to read books like Dune. I can't keep all of that in my head so I lose track of the plot. This is particularly true when there are complex family trees I'm expected to remember.
