some lineages have dedicated rituals for leaving them you can cleanse yourself of their mark, before participating in another one, or you’ll get very, very sick

it comes from a time where lineage and initiation were taken very seriously. when you’re initiated, you’re initiated into something, and there is such a thing as de-initiating

in the New Age context, religion and spirituality are a sort of mix-and-match of personal expression, like assembling a Burning Man outfit there’s initiation, but never de-initiation, because the initiation isn’t serious in the same way. it’s drawing upon a different metaphor

they use the same word, "initiation", but the word is so wholly cut from a different metaphor, it’s best to study it as a different phenomenon. a New Age phenomenon https://t.co/DrO4TJj6LY

the traditions where initiations developed, gods and lineages are something you end up belonging to the metaphor is whole-grained. when you belong to something, of course you ask it for permission to bring a different thing in https://t.co/caA88TfRqA

there are ways of talking about plant medicine, where you ask it, when it’s in you, if it would like to be in the company of something else you ask if it wants food in your stomach, or a different, erm, plant medicine

because you recognise it can fuck you up otherwise, and because you are approaching it with a relationship of relationality, personhood, reciprocity, and respect
