I miss Japan. Anyhow, as someone who was a professional translator for a few years, if I had written this card it would have been among the best work of my career. It is a work of art two sentences in length. https://t.co/kjmm8aHQq2

If for some reason you want elaboration on that, see this and the tweet above it: https://t.co/lhzWYdUNI1

@visakanv @chickpeasy (A less talented translator might have gone with “We confirmed the presence of the enclosed items from the laundry you entrusted with us. We humbly and swiftly return them to you.”)

“It’s three sentences Patrick.” In Japanese, it was two. The translator straight-up invented the “Thank you.”, which almost no translators would do, because you are not supposed to insert net new content according to rules of professional ethics. The “Thank you” improves it.

Try to count how many people have to care deeply about this interaction happening for it to happen, by the way, and how many different educational strata and organizations they are in.

Housekeeper, housekeeping management, 50/50 on equivalents at an external laundry service, purchasing, translator, friendly local print shop which will of course do a custom run of ten thousand of these even though it is annoying and low margin because the hotel needs it.

I note that they used the good paper, and am extremely unsurprised. (In the U.S. that would be sold to you as “resume paper.” It costs about 8X or so what the thing you normally have in your printer costs.) (I worked in office supplies to pay for undergrad, once upon a time.)
