i say this to build historical continuity between the mistakes we made in the past and the future if you're gen z and this is new to you, you may be forgiven for being distracted by the technological excitement but if you remember juul, then this is part of the same disease

i knew people like this exist. people who will with an innocent face build the next monster but im dreading going back into a tech ecosystem with VCs who are not going to have the backbone to denounce this because it has the shiny lacquer of tech

i love the people around me. i love my peers but there is a swath of america lost to the opioid epidemic i rarely think about them. opioids took them off the map. they're preyed on totally till dead by pharma it created a lower class of society, invisible to the rest

@DefenderOfBasic @slimepriestess @AskYatharth people are neither uncaused causes nor puppets of circumstance but rather a secret third thing granted some are more impressionable than others and pushing back on undue influence is part of the bigger process. actually getting it right is a different matter
@DefenderOfBasic @AskYatharth @aleksil79 well in my case what influences me to use nicotine is the psychosis symptoms that it treats far better than any medication ive been prescribed, marketing just shows me choices i could make, its still me deciding to do a thing because i want to, not marketing mind control
@slimepriestess @DefenderOfBasic @AskYatharth in general far more things are overdetermined like this than people realize sometimes the choice is between different enough things that it makes a difference but you need to see the underlying causes leading up to the choice point to leverage it
