juul was unironically evil. the founders kept saying, "no we're the good guys." they reintroduced smoking back to a new generation this is in the same category. it's shameless to me to be associated with this https://t.co/4bBJf4z8a1

i say this to build historical continuity between the mistakes we made in the past and the future if you're gen z and this is new to you, you may be forgiven for being distracted by the technological excitement but if you remember juul, then this is part of the same disease

juul didn't slow down on its own. people had to campaign, relentlessly, to get them to stop putting cute kid friendly flavours and labels on vapes there is exactly one outcome where this kind of AI Romance startup goes they will make it cute

there is a thing they could have built but they didn't these people hitched their decision-making on what's going to make money and go big. they're not going to be able to get off that train they're riding it to corporate hell, till they're the next cigarette companies https://t.co/HHCMjLBVxy

i knew people like this exist. people who will with an innocent face build the next monster but im dreading going back into a tech ecosystem with VCs who are not going to have the backbone to denounce this because it has the shiny lacquer of tech

which VC is bold enough to say, "fuck juul"? i hope they're bold enough to say "fuck these people" and let people around them know what they honestly think i trust the public to have a moral outcry. i don't trust VCs

you can see silicon valley engineers' eyes glaze over with e/acc. these are not people grounded in responsibility. they're brilliant boys, but not adults https://t.co/g1Ej6HaEsr

i love the people around me. i love my peers but there is a swath of america lost to the opioid epidemic i rarely think about them. opioids took them off the map. they're preyed on totally till dead by pharma it created a lower class of society, invisible to the rest

with this kind of technology anyone with slightest lack of mothering will feel the dark pull of this stone an increasing swath of society are going to have intimacy primarily rooted to this stone preyed on, harvested, for the rest of their life https://t.co/bx9EXP22T9

i didn't realise this, but we live in the stone age. except our stones are quartz and silicon and live in our pockets humanity has never quite escaped stone. the various ages of european pre-history, the stone age, bronze age, iron age, and now, the silicon age, all stone ages

maybe they wake up one day from the haze, they walk away from the pull of the stone and say, "what happened? where was i?" that's how you know it was an addiction https://t.co/GnOnQ7lGd1

today, i got a bit of a glimpse of a future https://t.co/0Ut5fGatII

this was an surprisingly hopeful-feeling thing to read after all that https://t.co/mU4rIaxcz4

>All the fascination I hear about this are how the latency is super low for this, and how they manage the expressions and scale, etc. . . . https://t.co/mqC5xhGcbm

i hope to god this is because @naval was rightfully embarrassed of being associated with AI Juul i hope his wife and children were like what the fuck man. you did this? i hope he applies uses the fact he has enough wealth to apply pressure for good https://t.co/OgMe6PrAPW https://t.co/mrGSBS6Lj7

@naval duolingo owl is so 2013 https://t.co/nPKtmcL1ax

@naval "there's something in this framing of groups of people being periodically peeled off of the alive stem of connected society into the lonely rot of corpo capture that gives me the chills bc it resonates as true" 😢 https://t.co/lluqfd0d26

@AskYatharth https://t.co/gy3wGGAkmU

holy shit that clip is the most bullshit bullshit of all bullshit, wow "honestly, I've never met anyone like you" HONESTLY, you don't know the meaning of the world "honestly", and you've never met a single fucking person in your fucking not-a-life

@AskYatharth my riff: https://t.co/MpHOG5YUn7

@AskYatharth if juul didn't exist i'd be smoking cigarettes or a different vape, i find the 'juul are specifically and uniquely evil' take to be pretty tired, it's a "kids don't have free will and are helpless victims of marketing gimmicks" hey @aleksil79 post free will meme

@slimepriestess @AskYatharth @aleksil79 Do you think this is true for everyone? I feel like we all know people that are more or less impressionable than others. What influences people to make these decisions? Does marketing have any effect?

@DefenderOfBasic @slimepriestess @AskYatharth people are neither uncaused causes nor puppets of circumstance but rather a secret third thing granted some are more impressionable than others and pushing back on undue influence is part of the bigger process. actually getting it right is a different matter

@DefenderOfBasic @AskYatharth @aleksil79 well in my case what influences me to use nicotine is the psychosis symptoms that it treats far better than any medication ive been prescribed, marketing just shows me choices i could make, its still me deciding to do a thing because i want to, not marketing mind control

@slimepriestess @DefenderOfBasic @AskYatharth in general far more things are overdetermined like this than people realize sometimes the choice is between different enough things that it makes a difference but you need to see the underlying causes leading up to the choice point to leverage it

@slimepriestess @AskYatharth i now also have a vague pointer to the insight that made me feel like i needed one https://t.co/s3ygdW7EVf https://t.co/U3MuoIlopQ
