in india, we use bells a lot. we ring one any time we enter a temple or sit by an idol. it's a way of letting the spirit know, we are here, and, im coming to think, of letting ourselves know. hey, i am here

the sonic echo of the bell is undeniable. it is a literal unity across space connecting you with the idol with the air. it rings its matrix of vibration in the air. it is a reminder of physical instantiation. sound is air touching you. bells are a very special sound

there's other ways of letting spirits, animals, and indeed, humans know you are here when you see a familiar human in a space, you go over and shake their hand, give a hug, something that lets them in their soma know, you are here. at least you speak hello

with animals we do the same. to not spook them, we announce ourselves. we say hi, i am here. we don't approach from behind

it's the same with spirits. to put a hand on the earth or tree and say "i am here." it is a sign of warmth, and normalcy https://t.co/30vWutvmUg

i want to share some animist wisdom from my culture, in the land of India, and from my favourite TV show as a child, Avatar: The Last Airbender that i find quite grounding, and helpful. the truth is relating to spirits is a lot like relating to animals
